I Drove my Tesla Model 3 Until it Died 💀

A big misconception with electric cars is that the battery is gonna degrade really fast and you're gonna have to replace it. Well, I happen to have a Tesla Model 3 that I've had for about a year now. And what I'm gonna do today is actually go see how it compares to the last time I drove it 'cause nothing really can show you the true power and potential than doing a range test. So we're gonna go do that today. But first, I think I should maybe, maybe grab a coffee? But where can I... (chuckles) I guess I've hot one right here. Alright, let's make it happen. And you see, the last time we did this, we got about 281 miles. But the car honestly has been performing a lot better than that lately on a few road trips I've taken it.

So, I'm hoping for better. But, we're gonna drive the same route as we did before to see kind of apples to apples how it does today. (chill music) (winds blowing) It's windy! We're at Twentynine Palms and we're supposed to be half way. We've gone a 171 miles, but we only have 72 miles left. Last time, we had a lot more left in the tank. But as you can tell it's windy and I think that's killing us. We've got 303 watt hours per mile so far on this trip and we're not gonna get as much range as we did last time. I don't think it's the battery this time. I definitely think it's the conditions. Although the temperature's good. It's windy! Which makes it cold. Let's get back in the car.

(chill music) We left lunch. We lost eight miles of range and now we're headed to the Cabazon charger. And we're going a lot downhill so we're gaining some mileage here, but we're at a point where we've got 20 miles of range ad 23 miles to go. One of the funny things is that the car knows the elevation changes and how much actual range you'll get. So sometimes you'll be in this situation where it doesn't show you you have enough, but it knows that you'll get it with regenerative braking and everything else. So, I'm pretty confident we're gonna make it there. Especially since last time we got an additional 12 miles, but kinda nerve wracking right now, on the trip here.

Zero miles. (bell chimes) Kay. Now we had 12, plus 12 miles last time. So, we gotta be able to make it 500 yards. And then the question is how much more do we have? Yeah, so we're officially zero at 231 and last time we have 12 miles. I'm guessing this time we don't have as many, but we're probably, my guess is 240 is when we die. So about eight more miles. So 12 miles is what we got last time. Now it's similar, but we were on the road so we were actually going faster. So we may get more this time. But that's within a mile or two. But the interesting thing is the kilowatt hours used. So we're only at 70 right now. That means that our watt miles per hour, the actual energy it took to go these 240 miles was greater and that's has to be because of the wind.

'Cause that was 25 to 35 miles an hour. That's no joke. We're at 241.6. We'll probably get to 242. If we, so we've got 10 miles like exactly after zero. That weird sound outside, that's not good. And so. If we were to get the same as before, it'd be like 243. Which means I have like five more of these laps to do. (laughs) I'm gunnin' it and I got no power so I'm, we're really this might be it. 243 though, so that was 241, no. 231.6. And now we're at 243.1. Last time we got 12 miles, I think, on the dot. That would be interesting if that. But again, we're in a parking lot. So, you know, if you were just cruisin' straight straight on at 50 miles an hour, it probably wouldn't be as much. But still, it'd probably be close. Oh dude, this has to be it. Come on. I'm flooring it and we're going 13. (beeping) Car shutting down. Pull over safely! Yes, I'm pulling over safely into a super charger! (beep) Where are they? That's not one! 'Cause it goes on the other side.

Okay. That's it. Did it! Okay, now shut up. 2on the mileage. 71 kilowatt hours. 291 watt hours per mile. That's it! Far less than we got last time. Like a lot less than we got last time. 25 to 35 mile per hour winds. Yeah, it's a lot. Let's go charge it up and talk about it. There's no steering though. Okay, I'm gonna hop in. - Alright. (groans) (ding) (cheering) - Alright guys, so we just did the range test. We ended up getting 2miles with 71 kilowatts hours used for transportation which gave us 291 watt hours per mile. Far less than we got last time. Last time we were, I think, around 281. Really, I think the conditions this time made a big difference. And the story, the reason why I think this is interesting, is because you, when you set out on a trip, you can have a number in mind, but based on weather, based on roads, based on traffic. You have to adapt and being aware of your situation, knowing where the chargers are, planning ahead, is gonna serve you really well when you go on these trips.

The battery in the car, as far as I can tell, is still pretty much the same when I charge to full. Instead of 310, it now shows 309. But what's reported on the screen isn't even truly what the battery can do. So, I think it's an interesting story today. I wouldn't chalk up that much of a difference to the battery, you guys may if you like.

But we'll also look at some more data in the future I have from Teslab with all the people that use the app there to see how their batteries are draining to see if it, this is one anecdote or if this is kind of a broader trend. But, I'm curious what you guys think about this. It was not the results that I expected, which makes this so fun and interesting to do. And so I'd like to know what you think about it.
