A loud pop echoes in the air. I stand watching the fire engulf the remaining wood. The cold wind whips my face but the heat of the fire reaches through the crowd.
People shout and elbow past me. My attention is fully focused on the flames reaching higher and higher into the sky.
Children run past waving sparklers. Their feet trample too near to the fire.
I’m handed a plastic cup, the contents is warm even through my wooly gloves.
“Cheers”
I take a sip from the cup, the warm liquid hits my stomach warming me instantly.
