Memorial day weekend often brings families and friends togeather in reverence and memory of fallen soldiers of past and present war.
Having a barbeque with hotdogs and burgers is by far the most popular way of serving food for this holiday, and a good example of American food culture.

Every region in New York State has their own particular favorite food. Long Island where I grew up is well known for awesome bagels and pizza. I will forever be a bagel and pizza snob for growing up there. One of my fondest food memories as a kid though was going down to the pier and getting the freshest and tastiest fried clams you could ever imagine.

Even though growing up on the Island, I spent a lot of time taking the train with friends into the city as a teenager, I had never lived in one. I grew up in urbanish suburb. Moving to the City of Albany was a whole new experience for me. There were no trains and the bus system good but complicated. There was definitely a learning curve adjusting to a more urbanized lifestyle.
Albany has a wide variety of different foods from different cultures to choose from, but one of my favorite affordable comforts foods I loved was a Jamaican beef patty wrapped in coco bread from the local corner store.. Sooooooo good!
I now live in a small but fairly cosmopolitan city in the middle rural farmland. Farmers markets are big here. In recent years there has been a big push for farm to table style eating here which I love! However I'm also lucky to live somewhere with a wide variety of very good international restaurants. I shall leave you with a photo of my dinner on Saturday night from a really good Asian fusion restaurant.
Mmmmmmm scallion pancakes with a salmon roll and a tempora roll. That is the beauty of N.Y. food culture. So many people of different cultures have settled here that our food culture is international! :)
