I was in school library just because of school conference. Still, no one was there for the conference and students looking for books catched my eyes. Like them, I found myself looking for books to read. I always thought it would be good for me to read several types of books evenly but unlike my thought, more than half of the books I read last year were about Korean traditional medicine(or oriental medicine). So this time, I decided to read a book about modern medicine. It seemed to be somehow different.
What I chose was 'complications' by Atul Gawande. Our school nurse teacher recommended it. The book was the story of the author's experiences and it was not informations-centered book so that it seemed interesting. There were 3 sections: each section was about the possibility of error, mysteries, and uncertainty.
Perhaps I've recognized the possibility of error in medicine subconsciously. But after I read section one to have seen the possibility of error clearly, I felt little bit nervous and I could think about some matters in surgeon's side at the same time. Every surgeon once worked as surgical resident and as I could see in the book, residents do not only assist performing operations. They actually perform operations. I knew that after graduating medical school, medical school students have to work as residents for 4 years but I never thought about the role of residents in hostpital. Surely they do not have enough experience. WILL IT BE OKAY TO LET THEM TAKE PART IN WHAT DECIDES LIFE OR DEATH? As the book says, they need to perform operations to learn. As a third party, residents need to perform operations for the future of medicine. But what if residents perform my operation? Most people hate to get their operations from the one who lacks in experience. So surgical residents cannot help lying. "I only assist."
Also, surgeons lie when they made mistakes to fail operation. They don't be lier maliciously. But they cannot help being lier because when being accused, the court is seriously on patient's side. Most people get angry when they read articles about medical accidents caused by surgeons and they may get angry when they knew surgeons concealed the fact that they caused the accident. I was like 'most people' but after reading this book, I could understand surgeon's stance in this kind of situations. I really empathized with the author who is a surgeon.
By the way, I thought of a bold idea while reading about the experiment to know about which is more exact in analyzing among famous surgeon and computer.
' A computer and Dr. Ohlin analyzed 2240 counts of ECG which involved 1120 counts of heart attacks.
Dr. Ohlin corrected 620 cases of heart attacks and computer corrected 738 cases of it.'
After I read that part, I thought like this.
'Than who corrected 1120 cases of heart attacks? Who or which is better than this computer that corrected 1120 cases in order to make it possible to try this experiment?'
I wonder how the experimenter of this experiment exactly knew 1120 cases among 2240 cases showed heart attack symptom while even computer cannot correct it exactly.
Books make us try to understand the meaning of long story by ourselves so that it sometimes leaves some questions and some bold ideas and that's one of the meaning of reading in my opinion. In this way, it was so meaningful a choice to have gone to library for a conference and borrowed this book accidently. The author of this book describes the life of surgeon so realisticly. And this made me think like 'If I become surgeon...' without noticing. I have felt that there are many students hoping to be doctor who find books about medicine difficult. And this book will be a good partner for them!
