southers' Film Review: About Time (2013), British Romantic Comedy-drama Film

"About Time" is a love story in a sci-fi movie, which tells the story of how ordinary people use super powers to live an ordinary but beautiful life. The story is probably like this. Tim is a very ordinary man, and when he was 21, he was told that his family's men had super powers through time and space. When he met Mary, who is the girl he likes, he wanted to be her boyfriend several times. But he had to give up because he changed other things on the way. Through time, Tim met Mary again and again, and he finally won her heart. Later, he traveled through time to improve the lives of other people, to better get along with their loved ones and friends, and to spend every day of their lives. Until then he no longer needed super power, because he finally understood the true meaning of life. The man has repeatedly crossed for love, and it is better to say that he not only travels through time for his lover, but also travels his time with his loved ones and friends. It can be said that this is a film that teaches people how to love others.

The recurring story of "About Time" is like another film "Butterfly Effect" that describes the passage of time. The protagonist is also trying to change his past and reach his own wish, and keep going back and forth between the past and the future. In the end, they failed to get the results they wanted, but they all found the meaning of their existence in the reincarnation. The construction of the entire film plot is actually the same as the "butterfly effect", which stems from the concept of meteorological dynamics. The original meaning of the word originally meant “a butterfly in the tropical rainforest of the Amazon River in South America, is occasionally flapping a few wings, which can cause a tornado in Texas in two weeks.” It is used to describe time. The chaotic state seems to be very relevant. For example, in the story, why the male protagonist of the movie can't go back to the past with a third child, and it is based on this setting. The male protagonist’s grandfather once said that any small change will change the specific sperm. This means that crossing the time and changing the order of the events will make the third child keep turning into different children. Therefore, after the birth of this child, it is best not to cross back before he was born. If the man wants to return to his father's death, it means changing the arrangement of the fertilized eggs that make up the child, so now the child you love will disappear and replace it with another brand new child like a stranger. So from the moment I decided to have a third child, the man would say goodbye to his father forever, and only let him live in his own memories.

The whole film science is scientific. Every time the male protagonist crosses, it does not necessarily lead to a result. As a human being who regards causality as truth, time is continuous, and the occurrence of the previous event will inevitably affect some later events. But what people don't know is that time is not a simple one or the other, but a nonlinear complex system. At the same time, a lot of things happen, causing various influences, artificially adding contact to time. It is unpredictable. This also reflects the unpredictability of time from the side, without any logic to follow, difficult to foresee, and contains unlimited possibilities. Even if the man is once again in the same place at the same time, he will not necessarily meet the woman again. Because all the causal relationships are actually disrupted by the numerous events that have been in the discrete time, disappeared into the distant past. The complicated combination of time and love makes the whole movie, although it develops along the main line, and is always in the ups and downs, which is more interesting.

What's more interesting is that the film's female protagonist Rachel McAdams also starred in "About Time", which is also a romantic love based on time travel. After watching this movie, you will only be worried about the twists and turns of love, and even forget that this is a science fiction movie. The former is ending in tragedy, while the latter has comedy colors, especially the description of the wedding, the scenes of life, make people feel relaxed and happy. Through superb editing, the story moves fast in the repetition and subtle differences of key shots. Whether it's a warm family reunion or a touching wedding, the film continues to traverse the past intricately, while maintaining the connectivity of storytelling, always driving the development of the story, and avoiding highly repetitive stories. The confusion caused by the "Butterfly Effect." The move also gave him the nomination for the best editing at the 40th Saturn Awards organized by the American Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Film Academy, which is considered to be deserved. The most eye-catching part of the film is "How long I will love you", which was sung by British female singer Ellie Goulding. She also sang the theme song of the film "Fifty Shades of Grey". And after her ethereal "sheep sound", the slow tone accompanied by the rhythm of the film, this song also sang a different kind of touch. The name of the song not only raises a question that plagues all lovers, but also tells the longing for the eternal desire of those who love each other in the long years.
Even though I don't think this movie can be considered a classic, it is still worth seeing.

My Score is 5.1/10
