Criminal - Review of the Netflix series (what a positive suprise)

I have often said it, and I am saying it again - I am not the biggest fan of Netflix's original content. Well, that might not be true anymore. To be honest, I feel like Netflix has been really smart. They created something big by gathering content from the best networks out there. When they got popular with more than 100,000,000 subscribers, they started to create material themselves and put the focus on that. So, now they are like a giant TV and movie network with subscribers all around the world, and the network to broadcast all their stuff worldwide at once... It is quite brilliant!

So, I might not be a big fan of all the Netflix original content, but I have got to say - it is getting better and better. And that is why I just gave the new Netflix series named Criminal a try!

When you look on Netflix, you will find Criminal: UK, Criminal: Spain, Criminal: Germany, and Criminal: France. All four series consist of 3 episodes, making it a total of 12 episodes. They all run in the same style and with similar content, but of course, with very different stories and crimes to solve. The same studio is used to record all four series, meaning the scenery is identical, but the language spoken by the actors differ.

Criminal is for those who love closure

First of all, Criminal is ideal for those who feel like Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, which means, those who love closure. I always liked 24 with Kiefer Sutherland, because I knew the story would kind-off (at least) end when a season ended. In Criminal, it is even better. An episode lasts for an episode, and in the next episode, it is a quite new case and quite new story. I find that to be refreshing, and it means you do not have to rush into a new episode, simply because the previous episode ended in such a way that you just have to keep on watching.

What is Criminal about?

A while ago, I wrote about the Danish movie named The Guilty. In this movie, we only see one actor (mostly) and he spends the entire movie speaking on the phone trying to solve a crime-situation. Criminal gives the same kind of feeling, except for the fact that we meet more people. Here we see some interrogators trying to solve crimes, but in a very limited amount of time (here comes the 24-aspect). In the first episode of Criminal: UK, they will have to let the suspect go after 24-hours, meaning that they need to make him speak within this period of time. Will they succeed? As time goes by, he mostly answers "No comment." But, can they break him and make him talk?

In other words, Criminal is about solving crimes and getting information in the interrogation room at the police station. And yes, that is all you see, and everything is about this. We get to know a few details about the people working there, but not much.

What makes Criminal so special?

It is really slow, but at the same time, it has a nice pace! Even though you look at people in a room for most of the time, you still have the feeling of tensity, of action, and that something is happening all the time. You get to see and feel with the interrogators, hear about their tricks, and see as they use them in real life. In a way, I would call this a breath of fresh air as it can be categorized as a different series to most other criminal series of our days.

Should you watch Criminal on Netflix?

Luckily, this is a Netflix original series, meaning you do not need to use a VPN or anything else to watch it on Netflix. And since it is so easy to stream it, I would absolutely recommend the show to anyone who likes detective/action/police stories like the one I have described here. If you have your doubts, give the first episode of season 1 twenty minutes, and you will quickly find out if this is for you or not!
