Photo Fun Contest - Week 21 – “Old & Abandoned” Photography - Old abandoned prison, Liquiçá, East Timor

in abandonedphotocontest •  6 years ago

Hi, there!
Hi, @claudiaz!

This is my post with 6 entries for this week Photo Fun Contest, “Old & Abandoned” Photography.

RUINA À DIREITA.jpg

I immediately thought of posting not one, but some photos of a magic and beautiful abandoned place here in East Timor. It's not an object, but a building. Or, better, some buildings in a complex.

PAREDES AO LONGO.jpg

This place is an old prison, from the time East Timor was a former Portuguese colony. Portugal sent some prisoners to its colonies, and East Timor, on the opposite side of the world, was the worst possible place to travel to, so the country sent the most "dangerous" prisoners to here.

varios planos.jpg

They were almost all political prisoners who had somehow defied the country. Portugal lived in a dictatorship then, so those "dangerous" people were the ones who fought for freedom, like the clandestine union workers, the anarchists, and so on.

The worst about this prison was that, being located in the most wonderful place, by a beach, prisoners were half covered by water on the high tides. Many died while imprisoned there. And many that survived ended up being "forgotten" by the Portuguese government and lived the rest of theirs lives here, married Timorese women and started their families here. Families that still live in East Timor, generation after generation.

Although this building depicts sad stories, it's ruins are still beautiful today, as you can see. It is located in the North of East Timor, in the Liquiçá district, neighboring Díli, the capital. These ruins are located near the road that leads to the most popular places near Díli, Liquiçá and Maubara, with wonderful beaches and restaurants, as well as handicratft and fruit stalls along the way. People that live in Díli often drive there on the weekends to relax and, if lucky, enjoy the dolphins and whales crossing by on the sea. I've seen them several times!

Hope you have enjoyed the post!

Happy Weekend!

Thanks, my dear Pix!

thanks @nolasco, lovely photos, I love visiting old building and ruins. I often think if those walls could speak, what stories would they tell???

How much did they see? I think alike, sweetie! I love wandering around old buildings and ruins too! Thanks for liking my post!

you are most welcome my friend

Great post, Isabel! You have included a lot of great photos and information. Well done!

However, I was looking for info on the Old and Abandoned Contest and I don't see it. Who's running that photo contest, may I know?

Thanks so much, Ricardo! I knew you would like the info! And the photos is a plus, thanks, my friend!

Cheers, my friend!

Nice, another contest to check out. I'm getting a mad about the @juliank one. I though I had shared at least a couple of photos that were not inferior in any way to some of the winners... and I'm still stuck in level 1, waiting for a first win. Arrrghhhhh!

Just join the queue... I guess there's a lot of people getting mad at him! He got himself into a huge project and now maybe he can't manage it all by himself... but I don't know.... Cheers and keep the faith, my friend!

Ah, ah, ah! He can always get help... No one can take care of such a big project alone. Or else they'll go crazy!

Maybe he went crazy, ehehehe!

An interesting post @nolasco. It's strange to see that such a beautiful place should be filled with such sadness.

It looks like a dream place to live but it obviously wasn't. 😢

You know, Gillian, East Timor is full of these places as it has a history of genocide and deaths. To the point that people here face death in a different way we do. A friend of mine that is more sensitive says the country's strong energy is determined by its sad history. I've been telling about ET history in some posts, and will keep posting about it from time to time. Thanks for your comment, sweetie.

Are you just visiting East Timor @nolasco or are you living there? 😊

I'm living here for a while now... working. I love it here and will stay for a while more if I don't change my mind ;).

How exciting @nolasco.

I have a fantasy of living around the world again and Steeming away. It's not likely to happen though. John still works full time and we look after the grandchildren fairly regularly.

That's great too... But I what to pursue THAT dream! And I will, so help me God!
PS: looking after the grandchildren during the breaks... when I have them, I mean the grandchildren and the Steeming away ;)

It sound like you already are if you're living and working in East Timor @nolasco. 😁

Yes, kinda of ;))))!
