A young Chinese woman last seen in Champaign, Illinois, on June 9, is now believed to be dead, the local newspaper reports. Investigators are still trying to locate her, however.

The FBI arrested Brendt Christensen, 28, a former graduate student, Friday on charges of kidnapping Zhang Yingying, 26. He is being held pending his arraignment in federal court on Monday.

Zhang, a visiting scholar from Fujian province, China, was last seen getting into a black Saturn Astra, on June 9. All contact with her ended shortly afterward.

FBI agents and police traced the car to Christensen on June 12, but obtained further evidence before arresting him on charges of kidnapping, the newspaper reported. Christensen stated he had picked up an Asian woman, but had dropped her off a short distance away.

Investigators say Christensen had visited an online fetish site, where he had followed a thread about abduction fantasies.

Details are at the newspaper website, and at the University of Illinois police website.
