It is an important thing to keep in mind when discussing abortion restrictions. What matters is what people actually face in practice when they seek an abortion, not what is on paper.
On a related note it is also what makes comparisons to Europe's abortion legal landscape rather misleading. While several European countries appear to have stricter abortion cutoffs on paper than many US states, many of those European countries in practice allow women to get around those abortion restrictions relatively easily with broad and frequently applied exceptions. For example mental health and socioeconomic status concerns of the pregnant person are exceptions to gestational age abortion restrictions in several European countries. And these exceptions are frequently invoked by doctors.
This is also why I advocate for legal abortion with no restrictions. I don't want doctors to base their health decisions on fear of political and legal retaliation.
I get your point, but it seems that the US "debate" is between no restriction whatsoever and abortion one hour before birth. Can't there be a compromise?
