Zealots do they hurt or help?

in abuse •  7 years ago  (edited)

Recently some folks took it upon themselves (@steemstarnetwork and @sircork) to downvote some of my posts.

They have a reason and the reason is they're calling it spam. Those of you who know me, now this is not spam.

That's how I mark posts I want to upvote later and let people know I hadn't forgotten about them when I promise an upvote.

I have attempted to reach out with an explanation.

Is it SPAM?

In my constructive use of steem, I decided to take it upon myself to observe this as feedback and solicit more feedback.

Should I not be marking posts I want to upvote for later?
Is there a better way to do this and I'm just not getting it?

How to Deal with Weaponized Steemians

I'm not going to say anything bad about these folks (not yet). I will say though they are using reputation and voting power as a weapon to hurt people. That much is certain. The question is more

Do people deserve it?
Am I one of those people?

Inevitably, innocents get caught up and entangled into drama that zealots create.

What then?
How do you fix this? Is it a problem in the community or something more personal?
Can this be solved peacefully?

You'd think that on a blogging site that every solution is a peaceful one, but that's not my experience. Things get ugly on steemit.

I found this post off the Steemcleaners mention. In all honesty, this post shouldn't exist because this issue shouldn't exist. The issue is that there is no way to mark posts on Steemit. To follow up, to read later, to tag what's been read, etc.

From the Steemcleaners standpoint, identical comments are considered spam unless they serve a particular purpose other than existing for the purpose of being upvoted or followed. Can't say I've seen another person that marks in this way in my entire time here. Not exactly a good idea as many users, particularly long-time users, dislike images in comments and flag them regardless of what they are.

On the other hand, carpet-flagging a ton of comments isn't the best idea although it is a legitimate use of one's stake. It's a waste of VP. The better solution that would make sense would be to promote development on the platform or via a 3rd party product that would solve the root issue, which is the need to mark comments.

My Ultimate is Charging

Not to peddle my own stuff, but I have been working on exactly this Upvote Bot. Right now, it uses steem as the datastore by scanning my flagged comments, but I am working on a persistent storage preferences site where you can store information.

This way users can give their posting key and mark posts for upvote when the voter is within threshold.

Interesting. Haven't seen that before. If you want my feedback here's what I think: using a small professional looking (colorcoded) image for posts marked for upvote would be a lot better than this meme. It would also be good added functionality to then have it update (edit) once upvoted to a different colored image. You'd be able to manually see if the bot stopped running or misfired with just a glance.

That's good feedback. I can do that, I'd rather lose the extra post altogether though. It unnecessarily increases the size of the blockchain.

If only everyone else cared about the size of the blockchain lol

Producing an off-chain log may work as well but would probably make it too complex.

I don't think I'd go as far as an off-chain log. Maybe just a database that looked like:

You provided no explanation or text on any of these identical posts, with some 50 or something like that in the last 19 hours, I lost count and didnt bother after a while, with zero other words but this repeated spam post.

I didnt check for upvotes, but that seems likely as well.

I did not flag any of your legitimate comments, but this is spam. Rapid fire.

You literally just posted your own proof forever in the block chain.

As a steem witness I am duty bound to point out I understand completely what all of this is.

Sorry if I don't want my voting power to end up like yours.

It's not spam though. Spam is when you're just posting to get something out there. There's a purpose for this and it's for flagging people I promised to vote for. Mostly people victims of @grumpycat. There's lots of them. If you read my blog and do your homework, you'd realize I have had some pretty rough times with my voting power. This is my answer to that.

Again, I don't mind the flags, but you should concentrate on actual spam. If you asked any of these people if they appreciate what you're doing, they'd tell you to gtfo and they didn't ask you to.

How about you leave spam cleanup to @steemcleaners, @spaminator, and @patrice. Vigilantism only gets innocents caught in the crossfire. Leave it to the pros please

Being a witness doesn't exempt you from responsibility. It increases your responsibility; therefore, all the people affected negatively by your actions, you also have to accept that and weigh it. You still have to get votes.

How about you stop by and meet my friend @patrice this sunday and discuss it live with both of us live in front of an interactive audience on Steemitizens of Steem on Sunday. Your invitation awaits at http://steemstar.net :)

What about during Trash Talk tonight? That may be a good fit too.

Because that was yesterday :D

wtf dude what day is it today

Edit: who the hell lists a midnight to 1am activity under the day that's about to start at the time.
