Albert Einstein once said “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” This is true as we always face new things in life as we grow older, we will never stay at the same place or phase in life as change is inevitable. Challenges are something that we are always going to face in our whole lifetime. So, how do you prepare yourself mentally to handle whatever life throws at you when you wake each morning? The answer is learn to adapt, why? Because adaptability is the personality trait that helps determine how you respond to change. Adaptability helps you to fit in a new environment and have a positive mindset in responding to challenges. So, here is some reasons why is it crucial to learn to adapt.
Firstly, it will help you to be successful in your working career, this is because adaptability helps you to embrace challenges better. As being adaptable means working without boundaries, and being open to finding diverse and unexpected solutions to problems and challenges in the workplace. Without limitations on your thinking and actions, challenges become something not to dread, but to seize and enjoy working through. Next, adaptability helps to become a better leader. Great leaders know that change is inevitable, and they don’t run away from it. Leaders will remain positive in the face of trouble, keeping their team members focused and motivated through tough periods. Great leaders are also open-minded and considered, knowing that solutions and brilliance can be found in many places.
Secondly, adaptability helps to improve the quality of your life, you will become much happier and more satisfied with life. Someone with low adaptability would blame on life saying their life unfair, they tend to feel hopeless, give up and disempowered once they face challenges in life, in contrary someone with high adaptability would think otherwise, they will be more focused on solving the problem instead of thinking how bad their life is. They still can be happy regardless of the circumstances. Psychologist Guy Winch believes that being adaptable has many benefits, one of them is increased happiness: "We constantly meet psychological challenges. Some of us succumb, we feel hopeless, disempowered, give up and some meet challenges, take the knock and learn something from it. Our ability to have life satisfaction, to be happy and to have good relationships really depends on our ability to adapt.”
Now, you might be wondering how do I learn to adapt? It is a skill that takes a lot of practice and time to acquire. One of the ways to improve your adaptability skill is learn from others, you might realized there is some of your friends that actually show a good adaptability skill, you could ask them directly for tips and do not feel embarrassed for doing that because being embarrassed would not take you anywhere either at least from asking their tips would help you a bit. Next, is be willing to make mistake and learn from it. Of course, mistake can be frustrating and humiliating but how you handle and manage the aftermath of it is what counts. It will help you to respond positively when you encounter with trouble in the future,
In conclusion, adaptability is an important skill that we have to practice and learn as it helps us in many aspects. Learning to adapt could be tough and tiring but it benefit us in our whole lifetime especially when we are in hard times. Instead of thinking how tiring and tough it is, just try to keep a positive mind and think of the progress that you have made and how it helps you.
