The paragliding crash
In the early afternoon of Tuesday 23 July, a man who was flying a paraglider over Malcesine, in the province of Verona, crashed on a cycle path that runs alongside Lake Garda.
The accident occurred around 3.30pm and the alarm was raised by a friend of the victim who was filming the flight with his GoPro. After the violent impact, the man was reached by a Health Service helicopter and an ambulance, but attempts to resuscitate him were to no avail.
The previous paragliding tragedy
A similar tragedy occurred last May in the Belluno area, where a 55-year-old man flying with a paraglider crashed near Monte Avena, in the municipality of Fonzano.
Having taken off from Malga Campet with the intention of landing in the valley, the man got stuck in the sail following the launch, which then twisted and made him fall for about 20 meters before impacting the ground, before his eyes of different spectators.
Immediately after the crash, the man, still alive but in serious condition, was rescued by a medical team arriving by helicopter. Unfortunately, despite the rescue attempts, there was nothing that could be done for the 55-year-old.
