KAWAM KAWAY XVI is one of the oldest sub-districts in West Aceh. This sub-district was once very broad, covering Pante Ceureumen, Panton Reu, Meureubo, and Johan Pahlawan. Where did Kaway XVI come from? Kaway XVI is very popular.
because this name comes from the form of federation of government in West Aceh in the past which consisted of sixteen main commander in Meulaboh, Nagan Raya and surrounding areas.
Kaway XVI used to be the name of the Federation of Hulubalang which was chaired by the hulubalang of Kedjruën Tjiek Ujong Kalak / Meulaboh with its collection consisting of: 1. Tandjung, 2. Ujong Kalak, 3. Seunagan, 4. Teuripa, 5. Woyla, 6. Peureumbeue, 7. Mount Meuëh, 8. Kuala Meureubo, 9. Ranto Pandjang, 10. Reudeueb, 11. Lango, 12. Keuntjo, 13. Gumé / Mugo, 14. Meuko, 15. Tadu, 16. Seune'am.
Kaway means "guarding" or unity or ties in a system of government in West Aceh at that time. Kaway is a federation consisting of several committees who have full authority in their government.
At that time, the entire area from Meulaboh to Seuneuam was called Kaway XVI, and its federation office was located in Ujong Kalak (now: DPRK Building). This building was formerly called the Kaway XVI Office and was once used as the Regent's Office.
After independence, the area was made into sub-districts namely Kaway XVI Subdistrict which consisted of Tandjung, Ujong Kalak, Peureumbeue, Mount Meuëh, Kuala Meureubo, Ranto Pandjang, Reudeueb, Lango, Keuntjo, Gumé / Mugo.
Then Kaway XVI Subdistrict in 1963 was divided into Johan Pahlawan. In 2000 Kaway XVI was divided into Meureubo Subdistrict.
In 1978 Kaway XVI still consisted of 12 settlements with a total of 113 villages and was an area with a large population besides a wide area. In this area there are also areas of paddy farming with a rather good irrigation of Gampong, especially the upper Kaway XVI. while at the bottom it is still a cistern
