RASA is concerned to accompany the commemoration of World Rhino Day which will annually be celebrated by the countries of this exotic rare animal owner every September 22nd.
Indonesia has two species of Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) that live in the habitat of Ujung Kulon National Park, Banten and Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) in Way Kambas National Park, Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Lampung Province and Leuser Ecosystem Area Aceh.
The increase of Javan rhino population in Ujung Kulon shows positive geliat. While the fate of the Sumatran rhino exactly reversed.
Sumatran rhino population tends to decrease from year to year. More than 200 years ago the estimated population of the world's smallest rhinoceros is still about 10 thousand individuals.
Since 1985, the population has continued to decline from about 600 to less than 100 individuals today.
Sumatran rhino is currently estimated to occupy only 237,100 hectares in the Leuser Ecosystem Area, 63,400 hectares in Way Kambas National Park and 82,000 hectares in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park.
Of the 3 million forest surveyed, the Sumatran rhinoceros occupy only 13 percent of the total area.
In the Leuser landscape, Sumatran rhinoceros are known to occupy areas beyond the boundaries of Gunung Leuser National Park, which means that the level of vulnerability of large mammals is higher, both from the lack of safeguards and the potential for conversion of forests into their habitat.
