Do you ever feel like you are lost? Like your life has no direction? You see other people achieving great things yet you are still stuck in your normal life? Wasting time on tasks you don’t think are getting you anywhere?

As a young man, we have plenty of energy and willpower to attack anything we put our minds to. However, often I find myself not having a target to aim at. We can waste extremely large amounts of time doing tasks that are kind of productive, but not really. Things like watching informational youtube videos and listening to podcasts are great habits, but they won’t get you anywhere by themselves. What you need for success is to be good at something, to have something people want to pay you for. In order to stop wasting time, and get this thing, you need GOALS.

SETTING THE GOAL

I think we are all fairly confident with what a goal is, it’s something that we want to achieve or do at some point in the future. In order for the goal to really stick however, there are certain methods to use which will help you significantly.

One particular goal setting method is SMART goals. SMART Goals following the following structure.

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time-Bound

When setting a goal, make sure to tick off all of these criteria. This will help you to really narrow down your goal, so you have a clear picture of when your goal is completed. Once you know what your finished goal looks like, you can set smaller milestone goals to keep you motivated on your journey.

A quick example,

BEFORE: I want to increase my strength in the gym.

S: I want to increase my bench press

M: I want to lift 80kgs

A: 80kgs is an achievable weight with the correct training

R: I attend the gym already so this goal is relevant

T: I want to achieve this within the next 6 months (set a date)

AFTER: I want to bench press 80kgs within the next six months

After completing the SMART checklist, now we have a much more reasonable goal to achieve. You can really see the difference between the BEFORE and AFTER goal. The BEFORE goal is very bland and doesn’t give you a good target to aim at, while the AFTER goal is much more specific and gives a much better indication of success.

Everyone has enormous amounts of willpower and drive, we just need to find a good target to aim at in order to unleash our capabilities.

CEMENTING THE GOAL

The next stage in your goal-setting journey is to really cement the goal in your mind, and fully dedicate yourself the achieving it. This is where your priorities really come into play.

When setting a really important goal, I often see people with the mindset

“I would rather die than miss X”

When you have this mentality, it becomes a non-negotiable task to make progress towards your goal. Your brain can think of no excuses, and so now progress is inevitable.

The key now is to get to this mentality, and even when it’s raining or you are sick or any other problems in your environment manifest, the goal will still be completed because it is your highest priority.

To continue cementing your goal in your mind, visualising the goal can really help. Start by picturing the scene of your end goal, and how you feel. Spend at least 10 minutes with your eyes closed imagining the day the your goal is completed. What are you wearing? What does it smell like? What do you feel like? All of these things will help you to cement the end goal in your brain and allow you to work towards that end.

ACHIEVING THE GOAL

Now that we have carefully selected our goal, and cemented the end scene in our minds, all we need to do is achieve the goal.

This step is going to vary greatly depending on the goal you have selected, but in general, try to make progress towards the goal every day.

For example, if your goal is to read one book this year, then reading one page every day will get you to your goal.

The consistent progress of working towards your goal every day will keep you motivated. Not making any progress for a while and then attempting to restart progress is very difficult. Your brain wants to keep you on the path of least resistance, and hence when you work towards your goal each day, the task becomes easier and easier until your brain actually wants to do the task.

Another step to achieving your goal is to check your progess. You need to compare yourself to where you were before, both to make sure you are on track to acheiving your goal, but also to give yourself a healthy boost of motivation.

Taking our gym example from earlier, If I want to bench press 80kg by the end of the year, and I started with 60kg in January. I’d expect to be lifting 70kg in June, and if I can do more than that, then I am well on track to achieving my goal. If I am not doing 70kgs yet, then I still have time to adjust my training plan for the rest of the year. This checking of progress will make sure that you are always going 100% towards your goal.

SUMMARY

Setting goals can be a daunting task, but taking the time to set goals correctly can really set you up for success.

In order to have great goals you need three things,

  1. To setup the goal using the SMART checklist
  2. To cement the goal by having the correct mindset and using visualisation techniques
  3. To make daily progress on your goal and check back to make sure you are on target

If you follow these three techniques, you will be successful in no time.
