You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

I’ve heard this said a lot lately, or a similar variation of it. It’s a quote by Dan Pena, the 50 billion dollar man (a self proclaimed title).

Today I listened to an interview with Tai Lopez, and later, while cooking dinner, I listened to his TED talk. He recommends following a 33% rule: Spend 33% of your time with people who are “beneath you” (read people you can help), 33% percent of your time with people who are in the same place/at the same level that you are (your friends), and spend 33% of your time with people who are ten times ahead of you (your mentors).

He doesn’t say who you should be spending the remaining 1% of your time with, but considering he reads one book a day (that’s right), I suppose he might recommend you spend that 1% of your time with a book, or possibly yourself.

At any rate, I think he had a lot of interesting things to say. I recommend checking him out.

Sort Order:

I try not to classify people to be below, on par or above me, and then to allocate my time accordingly. What an awful approach to life, to judge and measure with that kind of intent.

I know, it doesn’t sound good on its own; and, actually, it sounds worse when he says it because of the jokes he follows it up with. Basically, though, Tai’s self proclaimed mission is to figure out how to live the good life, and he recommends trying to divide your life into three parts, one of service, one of pleasure/play/enjoyment, and of learning. I don’t think he sits down and examines his life according these percentages (I could be wrong), I think he’s just saying, as a rule of thumb, balance among these three areas in life will help you become happier and more satisfied. If you happen to be someone who is struggling with happiness and satisfaction, look at these three areas. Are they in balance? If not, make a change.

I’ve been on a bit of a mentor search for a while now. I want to improve myself in a few areas. The two quotes I’ve mentioned in this post caught my attention, I think, because of this. I want to get to the next level physically, mentally, financially, at home, at work, with my family, and with myself. I feel like I’ve been asleep at the wheel for too long now and want to tart starting the ship some more.

Good classification...but I think it's hard to follow 😅

I think it’s more of a suggestion than anything. Nevertheless, it’s still a hard one to follow.

Absolutely right 😅

It is an interesting concept. The older I get, the more I believe that life is all about balance. So while I see value in his system, I personally might be inclined to let it happen in a more natural way, just less rigid.

I don’t know if or how he implements this idea, but I look at like this, always be teaching, always be learning, and always be spending time with people you enjoy spending time with. I think a lot of people make the mistake of not spending time with people they really enjoy being around. I know I didn’t for a long time.

Just like many others, Tai says choose your peers and choose your mentors well; and don’t forget to be humble and share what you know along the way. I’m guessing these guys, who are all businessmen, come up with these simple ways to package their ideas so that they can be marketed easily.

Tai’s TED talk is much shorter. I’m kind of interested in what he says at the end of it, that we need more Spartans, people who are willing to do the hard work and make sacrifices to be successful and make societies better. I can’t remember exactly, but I think he compares Spartans with Agrarians. I might be wrong though.

Anyway, it’s another system to think about when you find yourself feeling a little off kilter and want to make a change.
