First day back at work for 2019, and the first roasts of the New Year as well. Most of my activity has been back and forth at work and of course roasting and packing coffee.
2nd January and first day back at work after the Festive break, the only problem with having just over a week off work is the orders keep coming in while we are closed - so getting them all shipped on the first day back is a challenge. And the coffee I roast has been popular so I had to put in some after hours roasting tonight to catch up with the orders.
First up is Kenya Peaberry - as the name suggests these coffee beans are very small - and quite rounded compared to normal beans. The normal flat beans sit two side by side in the coffee plant cherry - the flat side of the bean is where they meet. A peaberry is a natural mutation which occurs in just 5% of a coffee crop - only one single bean grows in the cherry instead of two, it is rounded and smaller - but it is often said the single beans hold much more flavour then their double cherry counterparts. Often the Peaberry will be included as part of the beans in that make up an origin sack, but sometimes they are hand sorted out to be offered as their own grade of coffee. Compared to the next photo you will see these beans are smaller and rounder.
Indonesian Old Brown Java is next, these beans are processed from the cherries but then stored upto 3 years in the moist, warm rainy season air. It creates a unique stronger taste to the coffee, and also reduces acidity.
This is my Cattle Market espresso blend - comprising a mix of Brazilian and Honduras Arabicas roasted just to second crack, it works perfectly for espresso giving a rich smooth Crema.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, one of the my best sellers this popular arabica has floral aromas with sweet taste, low acidity and a medium body.
Indian Monsooned Malabar is last, another coffee that is stored for years in a warm, moist environment - loosing acidity and gaining body.

I LOVE coffee and am amazed how much more Coffee has taken hold of Britain. Over the past few years I have watched it really go crazy. At one point, a few years back, on my arrival I thought, "Heavens, this is like the 90's in American" back when the coffee craze was really spreading to the East Coast (it was in West coast much earlier) and all sorts of small independent coffee shops were opening.
People were meeting at coffee houses, art and music were appearing with them etc. So, as I was young and at Univeristy at the time, they always have a special place in my heart and I still prefer to go and work in them when I am in a place where I can find one.
What is nice is it still has the wonderful energetic independent feel to it here. Back in the US in most small places now, the small coffee house is gone. There is the big chain (starbucks or worse Dunkin Donuts) serving lattes and caps so the small guy was pushed out. In big cities there are still a few independents, but not like it was in the 90s.
Here, in our small village, I couldn't believe when we found, at the end of one of our footpaths, a converted old farm building that is an independent coffee bar that would happily live in New York City or Seattle, it is amazing.
Let's hope the British are smart enough (and I think they are ) to keep the independent spirit alive. I keep seeing more Starbucks here and there, but let's hope they aren't allowed to take over as they did back in the usa.

Happy New Year, certainly I hope it is a Happy and Healthy year for you as well.
Yes, in the UK we have a thriving independent coffee shop industry, there are very big chains of course, and even emerging medium size chains - but also many small owner operators that are really keen on quality and also adding value - nowadays the cappuccino and latte machine is just part of a whole brewing bar where you can choose Hario drip filtered or Aeropressed single origin coffee's.
And more and more outlets are starting to bring roasting coffee into the front of house coffee shop, it's interesting you mention a coffee shop in a converted barn because Surrey Hill's Coffee did that, although now it is just their roastery and they have a cafe in Guildford.
Coffee is definitely evolving in the UK, and it's becoming more Speciality with people taking more attention then ever of the origin of coffee - where it is grown - not just country but plantation, farm, farmer - true providence of product. Which can only the benefit the growers, it's helping drive prices up because people are looking to enjoy quality produced product from small holdings instead of commodity grade coffee from massive plantations which is often nondescript.

Yes, knowing origin is so important. This was more important in US for awhile and still is in large cities or more 'upscale' areas, but unfortunately now that places like Mcdonalds and such offer 'lattes' many smaller towns and vast areas of the US are again just serviced by a few chains that own everything and there is little variety and they don't support farmers but in fact take advantage of low wage workers in other countries, oh well. Let's hope the world IS changing for the better.

Thank you very much, it get's quite smokey when I'm roasting - the beans give of "lots" of smoke as they roast and while most of it goes outside through the ducting - when you release them to cool the smoke comes off every bean as it comes out and fills the room I roast in. It doesn't smell bad - and surprisingly it doesn't cling to your clothes in the way cigarette smoke does if you stand too near people smoking. Slightly like burnt toast - but it can get a little smoggy in my roasting room!

Happy new year, pretty sure there is no subliminal messages going on. It's all good, and even my dark roasts are not the dark - I'm no fan of burnt black oily beans - they might help you taste something like coffee through a half pint of hot milk - but if you want to enjoy the flavours of the actual coffee bean - light roast black filtered or with a touch of milk is the way to go.

The coffee I deal in is mainly Speciality Grade high quality that is from specific estates in growing regions around the world, I buy 60g sacks of coffee from Brokers and roast it for a range of customers from direct consumers to cafes and coffee specialists that sell it on. I even sell the green coffee itself for people to roast at home - bagging it up into 1kg bags so it is convenient for them. It's my own business that covers a range of products, and I am also the UK agent for the Turkish built coffee roasters I roast on, people looking to buy them come and watch the roaster in action - given these machines can be half a ton plus weight and a significant investment for a start up business being able to see them in action is a big benefit.

Thank you very much, the 60kg hessian sacks green coffee comes from the plantations in certainly keeps me fit moving them around! And roasting coffee you have to watch the process all the time, so it's always a walk around the roaster, checking colours of the coffee as it roasts and making sure it doesn't get too dark.
