Now that is a photo to start a post with, how awesome is that carving in the dead tree? Today a took a walk with my boy around a look woods known as Judy Woods, protected woodland that over 40 hectares is also one of the largest in our local Bradford district.

We took a stroll along a bridleway to reach the woods, parking some distance away from the actual woodland. The bridleway gave some lovely views over the fields.

Finally we reached the entrance to the woodland, there are actually around four main entrances - this is a relative minor one.

This tree has suffered damage from recent strong winds, look how it has split right down the trunk.

This tree we found very interesting, the roots looking like the tentacles of an octopus.

There are quite a few steep sections to clamber up and down, and some areas have a large proportion of slate deposits - which make it even more difficult.

Amongst thicker areas of woodland, there are also more open areas to explore.

This dead trunk appears to have had all it's bark stripped off.

Some areas get much more denser with trees, but there is always a path to follow through.

Look at the size of this fallen trunk. At this point we cross the bridleway again to join the larger body of woodland.

Another large dead trunk, again with the bark stripped away.

And this is like a crazy straw themed tree - very crooked!

Now we find the small stream that runs through the woods.

It is not so deep, but quite fast flowing.

At this point we are quite deep into the woods, and have travelled a good distance from where I parked.

There are some steep climbs to get back up out of the stream valley.

Another large clearing, this would make a good area to do woodland activities.

The paths are clear to see, they are obviously regularly used. Although we do not see to many people today, just a few dog walkers.

A bridge crossed this section, it most likely fills with water when the weather is very wet.

This is a very curious looking tree, quite spooky really.

We found a rope swing, there were many on the route but most were very high up - this was at least accessible.

There were many of these simple bridges across very small streams that must run to the main one we saw earlier.

Can you spot the squirrel? There were many running around the leaves, often you did not see them but could hear the rustling.

Someone has been doing productive branch collecting.

This fallen log is entirely covered by moss, only a few areas of the forest seemed to have the correct conditions for moss to grow in this way.

Back on the bridleway, the dry stone walls collected a fair amount of moss as well. And so my Saturday walk comes to an end, it was starting to get dark - and we didn't fancy being in these woods when it did!

These lovely daffodils were at the side of the bridleway, it has been so mild and warm this week you could imagine it is May already - it’s going to be a shock if the cold returns.
