Trying out the new Harry Potter AR game

in actifit •  6 years ago  (edited)

Today on my morning walk I tried out the new augmented reality game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Like Pokémon Go (which I had running in the background) there’s a map layer that corresponds to the real world, with various virtual points of interest — inns, greenhouses, and fortresses — that you can visit to do some in-game things, and various magical anomalies you can collect and creatures you can fight. (My normal look is already pretty wizardly, so I only added the glasses for the wizard selfie.)

I’m still getting my head around the mechanics, you get bombarded with a lot of reward screens in the early game, and they’re trying to tell the story of why you’re encountering weird scenes out in the world (it’s a lot less organic than the logic of Pokémon Go, in my opinion), so it’s a lot to take in. A lot of the magic involves a gesturing system where you have to trace a pattern on your phone screen to cast the spell. I’m not very good at it (yet?), but this part does seem setting-appropriate since wand motions are part of Harry Potter spellcasting. At first I was bewildered by the combat system because I could figure out how to “aim the wand” at the monster to get to the point where you can cast the spell, but once I did it seemed like there might be an interesting system there.

Unfortunately just as I felt like I was getting the hang of the game I ran out of the critical resource of spell power and I filled up my potion ingredient storage. So I’m going to need to get a better handle on the economy of the game (I need to visit more virtual inns to get more spell power). I’m not completely sold on it yet, but I’m going to try again on my walk tomorrow (with Pokémon Go on the side, I want to keep the streaks going).

Of course one of the points of these AR games is to get outside, and I was getting my Actifit steps in as well. Here’s a picture of the sunrise from the Owosso Bike Bridge (that’s the bridge I’m crossing in the screenshot with the owl).

WOW! The sunrise photo looks like an end of the world scenario! Did someone light it up in the city?! :O

Good thing you have been practicing your steps because if your doing doomsday Armageddon over there that's going to be a REAL world advantage! hahaha!

But seriously! I love that photo! Very cool Dan! :)

Thank you for continuing with the #AutomaticWin's every morning! Your doing great things for your health, mind, body, and spirit! Keep at it! #HighFive's 🙌

I have installed the game and played a little bit but am not really certain what I am doing yet. Most anomalies I run into I can't do anything about because I am low level.

I wasn't sure 100% what you meant by this yesterday, but when I was playing today I saw the message that pops up when a spell fails to overcome a confoundable, and it talks about boosting your level. Do you know you can try to cast the spell again? That message doesn't mean it's impossible to get it, it's telling you what can boost your odds of success -- basically each attempt gives you a percentage chance to succeed, it's not a hard limit based on level (at least that's how it seems to work), so you can usually get them if you try a few times (although each cast of a spell uses up energy).

It usually gave me a second try, sometimes a third, before disappearing. It is possible I was just out of energy and didn't notice.
I was able to overcome one this weekend so it is not all the time. Over time I think I will be able to make progress, although I don't play much so it might be a while.

I spent a couple weeks playing and decided there wasn't enough game to keep engaging. It seemed like all there was was a treadmill, a thin story, and a bunch of IP assets. Are you still into it?

I'm still playing, although I can't disagree with your criticisms. The grind through the skill tree is still somewhat motivating me, and the thin trickle of seeing content I haven't seen before has been enough to keep me going with it, e.g. the other day I had an encounter with the Sorting Hat for the first time.
