My Actifit Report Card: February 26 2019

in actifit •  6 years ago

Hello everyone, I had a day traveling to town and back and still got in some walks at home and in town.

Continuing on from yesterday's post about the Lake Margaret hydroelectric system here https://partiko.app/@j85063/actifit-j85063-20190225t114627064z
We are now at the top of the 4WD track up the hill and in this photo is were the gantry we looked at down the bottom of the hill comes to when winch up.

This is the winch house.

General area photo.

The start of the old railway line that was used in the construction and maintenance of the 2.2klm long pipeline. You can see a small rail car on the left of the track.

When the new wooden stave pipeline was constructed about 10 years ago after the old pipe was beyond use. They also made a rail car that ran on the same framework that holds the pipeline. This is the yellow frame you see here sitting over the pipeline.

A pic of the pipeline snaking it's way along the side of Mt Sedgewick to lake Margaret. You can see a section of the old pipe beside the new one.

More to come tomorrow.

I'm just trying to get my head around this.

So, there's a pipeline running down the hill with a rail car that runs on the pipeline support structure?

I've never seen anything like that before, it's an awesome idea though.

Where does the wooden stave come into it?

When I think of a stave I normally think of a barrel, so I'm struggling to understand why they'd use wooden staves on a steel and presumably concrete pipeline.

The wooden pipeline section is not very steep almost level from the dam to where it goes into the metal down pipe then runs down the steep end into the power station. The reason for building a new wooden stave pipeline was to preserve the history as this power scheme is heritage listed.

Cool view from above :)

Indeed and you can just see the coast line in the distance.

Nice to see the new pipe next to the old one. I wonder if there will be another one in a hundred years from now?
