Trail walking on snow and ice - Actifit: December 27 2019

in actifit •  5 years ago  (edited)

It was just a little below freezing today, so it was a great temperature for walking. This is fairly warm for our area this time of year. In fact, it was above freezing for several days, which means the snow on the trails melted and then froze again as ice. So we had to be careful.

I received Yaktrax for Christmas just for this purpose, but did I remember to bring them? No, if course not. Yaktrax are the coolest product. The snap onto your shoes and provide extra traction. If you were around in the era when everyone attached chains to their tires when the roads were icy, then you have an idea of what these are. They are like tire chains but for your shoes.

As you can see in the pictures, the icy trail surface is shiny. Fortunately, we all had pretty good boots with traction.

Quite a few cyclists ride past us on fat tire bikes. Can you see him?

Another cool thing we saw was that someone has groomed an ice skating trail in the creek. It’s really cool. You can skate around a pond, and then down a long stretch where you can probably pick up pretty good speed.

I had hoped to get all the way out to the Lake Minnetonka, which is our usual destination. It can be quite beautiful this time of year — all covered with snow and dotted with ice fishing houses. But my daughter had evening plans, so we had to get back.

Awesome pictures! I have a pair of Yaktrax but another brand. I cannot function without them when we get snow here and it starts to melts. Great job on your 11526 @actifit steps. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful night!

it's good to get out there and get the heart rate up, cold weather is not a good enough excuse.... however i say that as someone who lives somewhere that it is impossible for it to ever snow in and the one area that gets frost a few times a year is a tourist attraction :P

What a great area for a walk. Lovely photos and the skating rink is a wonderful idea. That’s the kind of rinks I skated on growing up.

We have about the same weather here Jayna. It’s nice when the temperature just stays around freezing but some nights it drops down. the yaktrax for your boots was a good gift.

Oh you must have had a wonderful time skating, @redheadpei! That sounds like a great childhood activity.

I remember those cold walks- I appreciate the memory but just got a chill reading! I now prefer the mild Austin climate ;)

I can’t blame you at all. The cold is an acquired taste, as they say!

Looks cold. )
