I am not doing well at this thing people call “relaxation.” My stress seems to pretty much keep at a steady pace throughout the day and the night. Yup — both. Round the clock. It is like a river, always flowing.

Why? Well, life’s demands, primarily, and work. Mostly work.

But work doesn’t stay at work. It rattles around in my head. It stays with me when I’m hanging out with friends, doing something with my family or having dinner with my husband. It stays with me all night.

How do I know? Because I’m not sleeping. I mean, I sleep for a while, but then I wake up. I actually try not to. As I’m floating up through the layers of sleep, I whisper to myself to stay asleep, that’s it’s not time to wake up, that there are still dreams to dream. And sometimes it works.

But when work becomes overwhelming, all my tactics stop working. I wake up at 3 am and I am thinking about a work problem, or I’m trying to puzzle out how to fit in more than will fit into my work day. I find my brain scratching around like a hen trying to think of what I’ve forgotten. And there are things — things that are nagging from some part of my consciousness that must get done. Even though I have them all on lists, I can’t ignore them while I do other things and find time for them.

All my tasks are like a nursery full of crying children, each one demanding attention and nourishment.

So I need to meditate. I need to get better at this. Please tell me what works for you. Please tell me your secrets.

Sort Order:

Body like a mountain.
Breath like the sea.
Mind like the sky.

Two minutes is a good start, five minutes is better..but two minutes is okay.
Good luck✌️

That’s beautiful. Thank you, @wavebrain.

Have you a tried taking a bath with essential oils? Lavender, ylang ylang, bergamot, rose, jasmin - you can make your own combination. They do wonders for stress as they help you relax and sleep.

Yes, those are wonderful ideas! Thank you. I love lavender in particular. I haven't done that in a while. Thank you for the inspiration!

I find it best to expel all the days' inhaled nonsense. Take several deep-as-you-can breaths, then fully exhale forcing every minute pocket of your lungs to release the air. Repeat this several times and when you start yawning, you know you've done it correctly because your body will be rejuvenated with fresh oxygen almost tricking your body into being tired. I find I sleep much more soundly if this is the first part of a pre-sleep meditation.

Suffered with much the same thing throughout my working years, actually put a notepad and pencil next to my bed, jotted down notes (normally solutions to problems unwinding in my head at night). Next is finding a happy place, normally a memory from childhood messing around the backyard with siblings.

I found getting the thought waking me up, by jotting it down left me less anxious about overlooking it the next day. Thinking back to far reaches of memory bank sometimes seemed to lull me back.

I know so many people that have been helped by watching ASMR videos on YouTube geared at insomnia and relaxation. Every ASMR artist is different, so you have to find the right one, but when you do it can really help. It is a huge community on there.
