#needleworkmonday :: Trying out tapestry crochet

in actifit •  6 years ago  (edited)

Aaah... it is #NeedleWorkMonday!

In the past week, I was intrigued with tapestry crochet. I have always been fascinated by the art of weaving and fair isle knitting where different colours of yarn interchanges through the process to create beautifully striking patterns, pictures and words.

I learnt that tapestry needlework requires some skill to:

  1. maneuver the change to different yarn colours
  2. change to different yarn colours seamlessly
  3. bring the different coloured yarns as you work
  4. manage the different balls of yarn to avoid them getting tangled
  5. keep the project neat and tidy

I realised that tapestry needlework can be tricky when it comes to managing the yarn, especially when colours interchange and I started to imagine how messy it can get. So, I thought to give it a try with a simple pattern (well, not so much of a pattern... I just went with a primary colour dark blue and insert a lighter yarn every few stitches 😁) to get a feel of how this works.

In my mind, the simplest, usable project would be a coin pouch. I started by chaining around 20 stitches and work a base of an oval before building the pouch with single crochets.

I decided to start simple first, just 2 different balls of yarn colours. The base, dark blue with a variegated light blue yarn.

As I crocheted the dark blue yarn, I carried along the light blue yarn. When it was time to change the yarn colour, we are suppose to change before the next single crochet. So, with 2 dark blue loops on the needle, we yarn over the light blue yarn and pull through the 2 dark blue loops before continuing single crochet with the light blue yarn and do the same thing to change back to the dark blue yarn.

While doing this, I kept the crochet consistent by making sure I carry the yarn the same order each time I change my yarn, e.g. the yarn colour that I am crocheting will always be at the outer side:

The yarn that I am carrying will always be enveloped by the yarn that is being crocheted. By keeping this consistent, the project and pattern becomes neater.

Then, I decided to add a 3rd colour for a little challenge but kept the pattern simple. This is where the yarn balls start to go a wee bit crazy. Imagine you have 3 doggies running around you in leashes and the leashes start to tangle. That is basically how it felt like 😅.

I figured there needs to some kind of a system. So, I put the 3 balls of yarn into a little basket and as I work on each colour, I will bring the ball of yarn over to the right side where it envelopes the other 2 yarns. It takes a bit of maneuvering but hey, it works. The yarns did not get tangled and as I worked on the project, it becomes therapeutically fun, especially when you are watching Game of Thrones catch-up marathon 😄.

I quite like how this is turning out, even from the inside, it looks kinda nice.

I am still working on this but I feel more confident now to take on bigger and bolder patterns and I have my eyes set on a few 😎...

My Actifit Today: April 22 2019

I found my oats and honey breakfast bars finally!! I walked around the mall a couple of rounds during lunch time and thankfully the mall was big enough for me to collect 10K steps while looking around and window shopping 😃.

Oh yeah it looks equally neat inside and out! This looks really cool . It’s great you already have a system going that works for you. I love the patterns that come from using tapestry crochet!

It seems you won’t have a lot of dreadful ends to sew in using this method. That’s a plus :D

Hehe yah. Just need to crochet something in a loop and we won’t have those dreadful ends. I am just realising that it does take a toll on my hand muscles. Now I need to rest from this 😅

Yes my hands often hurt after crocheting. Definitely need to rest them.

Wow, I like that, it looks really stylish :)
Do you carry the unused yarns at the back of the object?
I know what you mean about the tangling, and your description of three dogs on leashes running about is absolutely right! You seem to have found a good solution :)

Thank you @shanibeer! Ah, sorry, which part were you referring to, as the back of the object? The unused yarn is carried along as we crochet, I hope the photos below show:

I kept it consistent by making sure the crocheting yarn is always on the outer side (even as we change the colours), sort of "enveloping" the carry-on yarns, this kinda hides the carry-on yarns pretty neatly.
And because this pouch is crocheted in a loop, there is no need to sew in ends from the colour changes because we just bring them along and interchange the colours.
Does this help explain? Let me know :)

I will have to sit down and work through it :0) Lovely technique, though, thank you for explaining.

This is a nice way to learn a new technique! And it looks pretty cute too.

Hehe thank you @jamethiel!

Your little pouch looks so well made, the stitches are really even, you definitely have mastered a seamless way to interchange the different yarn!
It's a great idea to try a smaller item in a new technique before embarking on a bigger project, it definitely helps the confidence levels :D
Well done!

Thank you @vliet! Yup yup, I am looking at slightly bigger projects now but my hand muscles are getting sore. How did you manage your dress? Imagine me, just this little pouch and my hand is already sore 😅

Posted using Partiko iOS

Well, that's why that dress took me so long, I was basically doing about 1 hour per day crocheting.
Of course, there were days when I could dedicate more time to the dress, and that's when I would really start feeling the pressure in my back, eyes, wrists. I really don't know how people do it for a living!
I suppose taking regular breaks and stretching is the key.

Good luck with your bigger tapestry projects!

with such knitting, the wrong side usually suffers because of yarn broaches that are not in use. but you did it wonderfully: the inside of the wallet looks very neat. It is a good idea when knitting jacquard patterns. your wallet will be very cute :)

Hehe thank you @tali72. It is really fun to make and seeing the pattern appear as we crochet it.
