Surprised Myself with a Solid Effort! {Actifit & 5k Recap}

in actifit •  6 years ago  (edited)

Sometimes we surprise even ourselves. In my case today it was a very pleasant one! I had a 5k race this morning that I wasn't really expecting much out of but I knew I would go into it doing the best I could today. After not really sticking with a solid training plan and being under the weather this past week I figured I'd just go out and have fun.

It was quite frigid this morning with frost on the ground and temperatures right around the freezing mark. @dksart (my perpetual cheerleader) and I hung out in the car until right before the race started. Luckily it was a fairly small race so we didn't have to get to the start line super early. The sun was also out today after a really dreary week, too. It actually turned out to be a truly stunning day!

I lined up towards the front as usual for the smaller local races. Even when not at my best I still tend to do fairly well compared to the rest of the pack. If nothing else I know I can start out fast then settle in to my pace once it clears out past the start line. I was still having a little trouble breathing with some residual mucus hanging out in my respiratory system, so I just tried to focus on good foot turnover and enjoy the ride. You can see my split times ended up being very consistent.

Once I got going it just felt so great to turn it on again! I don't always realize how much I miss running (and running fast) until I get sidelined for a week or so. Though I don't always love cold weather, I do run faster in the cooler temps than in the hot, humid summer here. When I pulled up my final chip time I was shocked to see I was under 23 minutes! I haven't hit that since the beginning of the year!

It was good enough to make me the second place female finisher and 20th overall. Not too bad for just having fun. 😉 Apparently the fun didn't finish at the end of the race, though, as after we got in the car and started driving away I realized there was a bit of a mix-up in the medals since I am most definitely not a male. As my mom pointed out, at least I don't have that medal already!

On a final note, I forgot my phone case to wear while running so my steps today would have been a lot higher with the race included. At least I still got plenty in hustling to get ready for a soup swap party at our house tomorrow.

Have a great weekend!

Hi @plantstoplanks! Fantastic effort! I enjoyed reading about the Turkey Trot you just did and placing 2nd in the female category is AWESOME! I saw that you are in the Fitness Trainer category on @Actifit Discord so I figured I should drop by and say, "Hello!" As well I have followed you and up-voted your post here on SteemIt! :)

Hey there @wil.metcalfe! Thanks so much. I am a little behind on doing any @actifit posts, but I'll try to get back on track. The Fitbit integration is great--I only wish I had one now to make it even easier to stay on top if it! Perhaps I'll squeeze in some steps the rest of today. You do a fantastic job with the #automaticwin challenge!

Thank you @plantstoplanks! The #AutomaticWin Step Challenge has been lots of fun! The last one was pretty darn competitive! I wonder how the next one is going to go!? (I’m making plans as we speak so I expect it will be more of the same! 🙂)

Maybe you could join us! The more the merrier right?! 😁

I'll keep an eye out for the updates and maybe jump in one of these rounds! 😉

Nice one...Even though your training has not been the best, doesn't mean you have been working hard.
Regards @run.vince.run

That is one of the good things about just keeping shape in general. Even when I'm not as on top of my running, I still train hard enough in other areas to keep up my fitness level. :)

Congratulations for that 2nd position!

Good job!!

Thanks so much @xers!

Damn girl… you’re a beast!!! I love it, love it! Smoking everyone even on your “rest/fun” day. That’s a medal you’ll remember and is just a reminder that we, too, can get a mans metal anytime :) Great race my friend!

Haha, we probably should have turned around to try to swap it out in case the real male second place finisher wasn't as keen on getting the female one, but I think it makes for a good story. ;) Either way it was a great race and I am happy to get back to the usual running routine! Hope you guys are having just as awesome of a weekend!

Nah, I’m sure he loved it :) Back to grind today!

That's a nice medal even if it is for a male, lol ...............CONGRATULATIONS Katie 😊

Gotta love funny mix-ups, right? I texted it to my family for a really good laugh because as a kid I actually got mistaken for a boy a few times. 🤣 Pair being tall with a very short haircut and it was a very unfortunate time in middle school. Glad I grew out of that phase!

Blast from the past, lol.

Excellent! I am impressed with the even pace and the final sprint. Very well done!

Thanks! I think that might just be my most consistent pace I've ever held for a race like that. Sometimes I tend to over think it, so just focusing on how I feel can often lead to a better result!

Congrats on the unique medal! And some poor dude out there probably got yours... 😂 If you contact the organizers, they may have heard from the other person and you can swap, unless you want to just keep it. 😁

Haha, I'm actually really quite fond of it now. I put the photo on social media and tagged the organizers, so I'll leave it to them if they want it back to swap. I'm hoping the guy has as good of a sense of humor as I have. Or actually if he's anything like a lot of the men I know, he may not even have noticed! 😂
