Daily activity
Today it was a really windy day. Storm Gloria has hit Spain with seven-meter (22-foot) waves, snowstorms, heavy rain, and winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph) Fortunately, in Madrid the situation was not that bad. Although there have been strong gusts of wind, there has been no precipitation, neither as rain nor as snow. So I made most of my activity walking around the mall.
Educational disputes
Education tends to cause ethical disputes. Education has to fulfil two very different goals. It has to teach skills, but also morality. And the controversy always comes from the second part.
This is the article that inspired me to write this: The 'parental pin', the tool for parents to veto content in classrooms This is a really quick resume of the topic
In Spain a right-wing party demands that parents must provide their direct consent to any gender or sex-related content teached in school
This is not new. In Spain, in 2007 a school subject called Education for Citizenship and Human Rights was created. The Catholic Church inmediately opposed because it didin´t fit the catholic vision on homosexuality and gender identity. In 2009, Spanish Supreme Court rejected conscientious objection demands and ruled that attendance of the Education for Citizenship course will be mandatory for all students.
Citizenship education exist as a subject in several countries, most of them in Europe. The Council of Europe (which is not a part of the European Union) has made several studies about education for "democratic citizenship and human education policies" and encourages the implementation of that values in education.
Both parents and teachers has the obligation to teach ethics to their children. However, sometimes there is a conflict between education programmes and parent's morality. Education should always provide the best evidence available, but that leaves many questions open.
I think education should teach that any sexual orientation and gender identity should be respected as long as there is consent between all persons involved. Minors consent can't be accepted as valid because of the risk of coercion.
What is your opinion about ethics in education? What do you think the role of parents and teachers should be in morality? Please try to be civil to everyone as this topic is really controversial.
