Among other activities today, I stopped in old town Cottonwood after noticing a man standing on a corner with a bunch of exotic birds. It turns out he has been operating a bird sanctuary for the past forty years, and he was asking for donations in exchange for an opportunity to play with the birds, and take pictures with them.
After giving a donation, he put one of the bigger ones on my arm that I managed to take a selfie with. Mind you, this is the first time I ever let a bird’s claws touch my body. I was always weary of how sharp they are. He insisted the birds are friendly as he let one lick his nose. Personally, I would never let an animal with a knife on its face that close to my eyes regardless of how friendly it is. He said that if anything, this bird would go for the buttons on my shirt. It looks like he’s eyeing them up in this picture.
Then he took one of the smaller birds, had it grasp a stick, then spun it around in circles as it held on. The bird seemed to be enjoying the ride. He then set it in my hand on its back then turned away. The bird dropped the stick, and started fidgeting around. I yelled that this bird was freaking out and he said that it just wanted to play as it rolled back onto its feet then made its way up my arm, and onto my shoulder before I could get a picture of it.
I never knew these animals could have so much personality.
