My Actifit Activity Log [11.02.2018] S.[M].A.R.T. GOALS

This is a continuation of the previous post about setting S.[M].A.R.T GOALS. Last time we covered the letter [S] and before we get to discussing what [M] stands for I would like to take the time to make another point about why [S] for [S]pecific is so important.

So! Why is it so important to be [S]pacific when setting health and fitness goals? I’ll explain.

To make this easy let’s set a hypothetical goal. How about this one?

“I want to loose some weight.” (I always hear this one!)

Ok! So that’s a good start but this goal/deceleration falls short from what it means to set a effective [S].M.A.R.T. GOAL.

Where this goal statement falls down is that it is in no way [S]pecific enough. Stating a desire without being [S]pecific is far to vague for any sort of attainment. For one, how would you know when you have reach your goal?

As you can see this is a BIG problem with saying that you want to loose weight without being more [S]pecific about your intention.

And so with this explanation of the importance of [S] in setting [S].M.A.R.T. GOALS we will use this important point as a bridge to the next letter in our acronym.

The letter [M] stands for [M]easurable. Setting a measurable goal is all about honing in the specifics of your goal and the more you hone in your goals the easier it is to achieve them.

I always tell my training clients that, “You can not manage what you do not measure so be sure that your objectives are [M]easurable.”

To use our above example to further seek clarity a better way to form the statement would be to change, “I want to loose some weight.” to, “I want to loose 10 kg.”

An even better way to clarify while also establishing a metric that can be measured would be, “I want to loose 10 kg of body fat.”

With a [M]easurable goal you’re able to gage if you are winning or loosing and adjust your play much the same way your favourite sports team would adjust their play based on the games score. Imagine, now, if no one was keeping track of the score!? How long would it be before the fans got bored and left the game? Would the players be playing their best possible game? Would anyone want to pay them millions to play?

I think you know the answer to this...

So! That’s why sharpening the clarity of your health and fitness (any goal for that matter) goals by including a factor that can be measured is so vital to the eventual attainment of a goal worthy of your time and attention!
