Powell's Books is one of our country's GREAT bookstores. It's huge, with an excellent selection of all manner of books. Perfect for book browsing. I buy books there whenever I'm in Portland, and I've purchased books from there online as well.
It's a sad day when a bookstore refuses to put a book on its shelves because of threats of boycotts or violence. "This book will not be on our store shelves, and we will not promote it. That said, it will remain in our online catalogue," said Powell's in a statement.
The book in question is written by the controversial anti-antifa activist/journalist Andy Ngo. Even the book's title is intentionally provocative: "Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy." Is the book any good? I don't know. It won't be published until next month. I located online three other books on the Antifa movement which are pro-Antifa.
Powell's carries two of them:
- Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, by Mark Bray;
- The Antifa Comic Book: 100 Years of Fascism and Antifa Movements around the World, by Gord Hill and Mark Bray;
- Inside Antifa: The Tactics, Culture, and Practice of Militant Antifascism,
by Stanislav Vysotsky
The American version of Antifa was born in Portland, as was its fierce critic, Andy Ngo. It seems to me that Portland's premier bookstore, Powell's, ought to be the perfect place for one to find both pro- and anti-antifa books.
