A few years ago, I was prepping for the Security+ Certification. My job experienced a security incident. A few days after the incident, one of the security specialists was at where I worked. I took an opportunity to understand how an incident response happens in the real world.
With a fresh set of attacks on women's reproductive rights underway. I can't help but think a #maidez movement may truly need to be developed. Might such a movement be a way to put a model of resistance I proposed into reality? This model consisted of four components; Mutual Assistance, Mutual Education, Mutual Defense and Mutual, secure, Communication. These components do not fit on top of each other like a wedding cake, they are more like a mesh.
If there is a "core" or "hub" to this model, it may be mutual assistance. This movement would require a lot of resources, and may have to go well beyond cash.
With a financial base solid, the next component to be created might be secure communication. The activists and people that this movement would be working with may be in hostile areas. A lot of these areas have long been hostile to progress of any sort. There may be a reason many of the current legislation is coming from parts of the country that were part of the Confederate States of America and were among the most resistant to civil rights.
Activists would need to learn how to use these technologies, and this would be one component of mutual education. This is where skills ranging from herbal methods to general empowerment would be taught.
One other thing that could be taught are skills that may fall under mutual defense. Even in States that choose to protect and preserve reproductive freedom, facilities may need protected. The transport of patients may also need to be protected.
If a lot of this sounds like an Underground Railroad or the networks that existed in Nazi Germany, it should.
A Weapon For Choice
It isn't enough to "talk the talk", one has to "walk the walk". I also would like to make a contribution to this effort myself. To this end, I plan to try to create a VPN Gateway.
I plan to take a Pi I have and am currently using as an Ad Blocker and add the VPN functionality. The next step will be to purchase as Pi Zero and setup and test the gateway.
The end of this journey would be to present the gateway to the local Planned Parenthood office and educate the users on its configuration and use.
I will be keeping you folks advised on the progress.
