Bystander culture. Activist tourism VS Being an Ally.

in activism •  5 years ago

Being a bystander is in fact a danger to society. In these times of children dying the desert, or drowning, or being neglected to death inside of for profit concentration camps we cannot be tourists in the charge to a fascist state.

There is a big difference between engaging in acts of protection and watching the protectors. The current bystander culture has been enormously detrimental to our country here in the USA, and sadly, around the world.

I get that it is dangerous to stand in these times of racist violence and hate. I get that not everyone can risk arrest or death as happened to Heather Hayer in Charlottesville. Believe me when I tell you that I have a lot to live for and many who I do protect. Still, I show up. I speak out. And for my part I create social commentary, and allegedy, go to jail if I believe a bad law is being enforced too well.

Please don't take this post too personally. Please do take a personal stand. Learn where your hard lines are and don't let creeping fascism move your moral compass beyond the point that you can reasonably survive.

Today's Periscope on bystander culture.
