How A Simple Happiness Exercise Might Help With Treatment For Addiction

Despite many therapies that are available today to help those who are suffering from substance abuse, addiction is still difficult to treat and widely prevalent in society. Thousands of people die every year because of drug addictions and overdose. Many who are in need of treatment will also likely never receive it. For those who are open to long-term treatment, there are a myriad of options available to try and tools that might help.

There are conventional methods with different programs available at various rehab facilities and treatment centers and there is also a growing interest for alternative solutions as well with things like cannabis, ibogaine, and kratom.

Researchers have recently found that some simple happiness exercises might be able to help too.

More specifically, researchers believe that positive psychology exercises could have the potential to boost happiness for those who are going through treatment and recovering from substance abuse.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital Recovery Research Institute had participants engage in a myriad of short writing exercises detailing happy moments from their life; they had to relive those happy moments when telling about them.

500 participants had engaged in the online survey as a part of the study and they were assigned to a variety of psychology exercises.

The participants who had reported experiencing the greatest boost in their mood were those who had done the exercise which required them to select a photo of their own and describe what was going on in that photo; give details about a happy time in their life.

Researchers concluded that these exercises might prove to be useful as helpful tools for those going through treatment for addiction, they might be able to promote happiness during treatment. That may prove beneficial for long-term recovery.

Hey @doitvoluntarily, how fantastic to hear such positive results from mind/memory exercises. It is so sad that addiction is such a hard one to treat. If only there was enough resources to assist these poor people a helping hand to get well. I see it as a mental health problem.

I find the information you present very interesting, and it could be applied not only to the addiction of drugs and alcohol, but also to people with depressive states due to emotional reasons, such as loss, divorce, separation, addiction or attachment to the couple. I think everything that changes your thinking system and takes you from where you have to try it.
Nice to read you, thanks for the information. A hug.

Some people live crappy lifes and result to drug abuse and addiction. I also feel some people live a down, financially challenged life causing It hard to get into rehab... and the drugs doesnt help and only gets them into more problems financially. Prayers to those who are fighting the addiction.
