The entrepreneurial spirit of the Indian diaspora in Australia is certainly a force to reckon and more so over the last few years. Media reports refer to the Diaspora as a “national asset”.
Our first ever edition of Who’s Who of Adelaide’s Indian Community turns the spotlight on entrepreneurs from the Indian community who are making a mark for themselves not only in the region but across the nation. Restaurateurs, influencers, creators, designers… they come from all walks of life, with one thing in common, the fact that they chose to make Australia their home. They’ve had their ups and downs, but they’ve never let a challenge overcome them.
Take the case of Amit Kumar. When his business partners left him in the lurch, he began working day and night at turning his café into a profitable venture.
Though a successful businessman today, Kapil Virmani still wakes up early every Sunday morning to clean his office and car, an act which he says is a reminder of “where he came from” and how far he has come. He arrived in Australia at age 20, with just $500 in his pocket.
Also find out what made pharmacist Manu Salaria move to Australia in 2008, taking up a job as a cleaner and a truck driver to stay afloat until he found his footing in business.
For most of these entrepreneurs it was the lure of Australia as a level playing field, the immense opportunities that presented itself in the island nation that brought them here. Allow them to tell you the rest of the story.
