Are you viewing STEEMIT ads? // You should be

in ads •  6 years ago

Ive seen some backlash from folks about STEEMIT.INC adding ads to their site. While i can understand that people might be pissed about it, i see this as a good thing. I usually have my adblock on (The Brave browser works slow for me) but in the case of Steemit i decided to turn it off.
Not only did i turn my ADBLOCK off, i also made a promise to myself to click at least 1 ad a day in case the advertiser opted for a CPC advertising model (Cost per click) instead of a CPM model (Cost per 1000 impressions).

Look, i know Steemit.inc messed up and that its their fault and their fault only that they are in a position they are now. But now is not the time to keep hammering on that point... Repeating the same thing over and over again. Whats the point of that?

Its time to help any way we can. I cant code nor am i one of the cool kids that can get their voice heard by Steemit.inc and affect change that way. I cant do any of that and neither can most of us here....

But dammit, i can click on a ad couple times a day and help out that way!

I know a lot of people are emotional right now and that Steemit.inc is an easy target. I also know everyone is waiting for some miracle community effort.

The community needs to come together!

(I cringe so hard when i hear this platitude repeated over and over again, haha)

How about we just click the damn ads few times a day for a start? How about that as an idea? Thats a concrete thing you can do for Steem and the best thing of all is that you can do it right now, by yourself... Go do it now!

By helping to keep Steemit.inc afloat youre (hopefully) affecting Steem development in a positive way.

Ill see you around and keep on!

I am glad that you have called out to the community in this. As a community we can only do what's right and we need to come together on this.

;0)

Yep. Completely agree. Another thing i forgot to mention is that a cost per click if youre US based can be quite high. Im not sure what model steemit is going with but if it is pay per click we can do a lot for them.

I have been clicking them almost by accident at times!

Haha. Youre helping and you dont even know it. :D

Someone asked me what is up with the ads recently and I was like wtf are you on about..... then I checked and brave was blocking 2 ads. Oh well shit happens.

Haha. Yeah, i just noticed yesterday that i was blocking ads on Steemit. We can really help out by shutting off our adblock and clicking a few ads when it crosses our mind.

Found a wild ad...
Think it helps if I quickly open it in 100 more tabs? Same way I browse porn.

haha. I think they might be having safeguards against that. :D

I don't have problems with seeing ads. I actually clicked on one of the ads today, and found it interesting. What I do have a problem with is the demands of advertisers.
When people or organisations become dependent on advertising revenue, the advertisers get the upper hand. They can dictate content and policy.
One thing I love about Steemit is the lack of censorship. There is a very small amount of censorship, but in general, the community polices itself. If the platform becomes dependent on advertising revenue, big advertisers can threaten to withdraw their revenue – if, for example, content that they deem might have a negative impact on their product, is published. We've seen this time and time again on other social media platforms. I don't want Steemit to go the same way.

Hmm. I see your point. I still think STEEMIT is way too small to be that interesting to big advertisers. There is also one more thing that i see as making us safe from that kind of outcome. That is the fact that STEEMIT is just one front end on the STEEM blockchain and because all frontends basically show the same thing, jumping from one to the other is much easier which means that if STEEEMIT decides to abide by advertiser wishes, we just jump over to STEEMPEAK or BUSY.
Thats why i dont see that happening.

Yes that is a good point. If the advertisers start dictating content, we can use another platform - as long as there are no advertisers dictating content there.

... You can always make your own. Shouldnt be too hard to clone steemit. A lot of people already done it. :D

My technical skills just about stretch to building my own website haha.

I just ignore them. Not interested in getting odd crap on my devices.

Haha. Fair enough.
Im pretty sure you wont pick up a virus, though.

@theycallmedan

See if you find this like something worth doing a community "call to action" for...
