MARTIN LUTHER EXCOMMUNICATED

in adsactly •  7 years ago

On January, 3, 1512, Pope Leo X issued the papal bull decet romanum pontificem, which excommunicates Martin Luther king from the Catholic Church.
Martin Luther, the chief catalyst of Protestantism, was a professor of biblical interpretation at the university of wittenberg in Germany when he drew up his 95 thesis condemning the Catholic church for it's corrupt practice of selling indulgences, or the forgiveness of sins. He followed up the revolutionary work with equally controversial and ground breaking theological works, and his fiery words set off religious reformers all across Europe.
In January, 1512, Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther. Three months later, Luther was called to defend his beliefs before holy Roman emperor Charles V at the diet of worms, where he was famously defiant. For his refusal to recant his writing, the emperor declared him an outlaw and a heretic. Luther was protected by powerful German princes, however, and by his death in 1546, the course of western civilization had been significantly altered.
Martin Luther was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, and monk, and a seminal figure in the Protestant reformation.
Luther came to reject several teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic church. He strongly disputed the Catholic view on indulgences that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. Luther proposed an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy of indulgences in his 95 thesis of Thesis of 1517. His refusal to renounce all of his writing at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the diet of worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Emperor.
