Addiction and the way out

Addiction is a psychological disease where one who is involved has difficulty in giving up the substance which he take for the feeling of wellbeing. There is a compulsive craving (urge) for the substance, which may be in form of drugs or drinks e.g Alcohol, Indian hemp and Tobacco.
Characteristics of those who are prone to Addiction

1. Immaturity ( emotionally)
2. Spoiled child (inferiority complex)
3. Drug dependency for Dutch courage
4. Neurotic personality and people who are constitutionally anxious

Cause of Addiction

1. Material deprivation as a result of war, divorce, and role conflicts etc.
2. Long-time e.g. morphia or pethidine for a fractioned patient.
3. Urge for affluence ( to get rich quickly)
4. Pharmacological influence e.g a pharmarsist or a nurse may have an access to drug, he or she may abuse this privilege.
5. Bad company and unemployment.

To Self

Mentally and physically his health will be tampered with. He cares a little and he sleeps a little which invariably affect his total health.

To the family member

i.e. wife and children. An addict fails in his responsibilities for the care of his home, he may therefore lose his wife or the children. His actions affect the growth and the development of these members.

To the society

His interpersonal relationship is poor particularly in his place of work. He gets there late. He fails to put in his best. This leads to loss of job. He may react badly to the situation by committing crimes. The people in the society will invariably suffer.

Management

1. Prevention : good education in the clinics, schools and hospital on child development, love towards them, also a thorough supervision on the kids when they are growing
2. Breaking of bad habits: this could be done through breaking of bad habits childhood, changes of environment and thorough education
3. The formation of Addict Anonymous association.
4. Good rapports should be created with the victim as part of the treatment. He should be accepted and respected making him to change from his bad habits.
5. Government should provide enough job opportunities for the people.
6. Drug should be legally controlled by the Government.
7. The victim should be treated comprehensively i.e. he should be treated wholly, the wife, relatives and friends should be treated along i.e. they should be educated on the importance of accepting this to make his condition better or rejecting him to make his condition worse.
