VIDEO: Bringing LOGS To The SAWMILL ~ Harvesting Cedar Logs With TRACTOR - RAW FOOTAGE

in adventure •  7 years ago

Our homestead has hundreds of beautiful eastern cedar trees. They are actually a type of Juniper but some call them Eastern Red Cedars. Inside they have the most beautiful red and purple colored wood that can be made into amazing wood working projects and furniture. Harvesting this abundance of wood allows us to save money on project materials and even have a potential to earn money.

So I was out in the woods and decided to pull out my phone and just start filming what I was doing. I don't normally record like this but I figured you might like the raw footage.

The Big 50HP Massey will haul any log out of the woods that it can get to with power to spare. It's the true work horse of our homestead. Once on the mill, these cedar logs will be turned into beautiful boards that can be used in a variety of projects or sold to wood workers.

Zach,
Any recommendations on a saw mill? Wanglerstar has some recommendations but has the Cadillac, I am looking more for a good Ford.

Bob

Yeah, his mill is pricey. Our will run you around 3-5k. Its an M14 Foley Belsaw. Its about the same price range as a low end band saw but most I talked to saw you really need to spend 10k or more to get a good reliable band saw. Circle saws at the way to go. The main disadvantage is they have a larger kerf but I didn't care about that.

yes, although M14 Foley Belsaws are becoming harder and harder to find... and replacement blades are expensive...just retoothing a old blade can be somewhat expensive if you are having to replace 40-60 teeth. Occasionally you find a complete set up showing up on sawmill exchange. Heck, i've been keeping my eye out for even just the log carriage set up, as i can build the rest... so far to no avail. i either have to go across country and pick it up, or they are sold before i can get to it... i'm like you, the Kerf doesn;t really bother me , if you're on a farm/homestead there are always a use for the sawdust...

Right yep! Saw dust is good. I have 34 teeth in my saw mill and the teeth for my particular blade have been discontinued. A new blade with teeth will cost me about 2k. I have enough teeth to get me through the next couple years but then I will have to get a new blade. The good news is the blade will probably sell for over 1k on the art market. Before I picked up my mill, someone stopped by to see the former owner and offered full price for just the blade so that it could be painted. LOL! So hopefully when the time comes, it will help pay for a new one. It you can grab a Foley, get it!

Have you given simonds a look? they seel both blades and teeth. Is it possible their teeth might fit your blade? http://www.simondsint.com/circularsaws/Pages/items.aspx?SITerm=4fda764b-17fb-43ae-b134-15433aa2cb96 I always try to find a way to save the most money i can. I don't even have a mill yet , or my property to put it on yet, and i have a ton of websites saved that i can use to make life a little easier and cost effective for when i do.. Anyhow, go ahead and check them out, maybe it can save you quite a bit of money in the short term.. i mean as long as the blade doesn't warp i don't see any reason you can't just keep changing teeth if you can find a supplier. Hope this helps brother..

Yes, I buy my teeth at simmonds. They had one box left for my blade. They said that it had been discontinued and they will no longer be making them.

WOW! well that stinks... and their blades aren't cheap either.. Hopefully you can market those mantles and slabs to cover the cost of replacing in a few years.

Thanks for the info......

I have Eastern Cedars all over. I am considering the purchase of a chainsaw mill. That wood is beautiful!

Yes it is. THANKS FOR WATCHING!

That is a good video. I really like to see logging and saw mill work. I love the smell of fresh cut wood as it comes off the mill.

Nice setup. I got a little dizzy watching this one, but nice to see how you get it done there!
