Holy Mackerel! ... the perfect bait for catching huge striped bass!

Why Knot?

What is it about pulling away from the harbor as the sun comes up that just can't be matched? You have the right bait, the right tackle, the tide is perfect, but still, nothing is certain. That is why it's called fishing, not catching. But for us, fisherman, days like this make it all worth it.

Finding the Bait

Sometimes finding the mackerel is just as hard as locating the stripers, if you can't locate the school you can't get them to bite. Once you find a school of mackerel, you can jig three or four at a time using a sabiki rig. After that, straight to the live well!

Rigging the Bait

I've found, that chunking the mackerel makes for easier fishing, but the fish you do catch are not as large. The chunking presentation.

For a live presentation, a hook can go right under the dorsal fin of fish fresh out of the live well. This will give the mackerel the ability to swim on its own.

I am from the Whaling City of New Bedford. If you don't eat fish around here it is a crime lol. My father was a fish cutter back in the day and my first job was bagging scallops while in high school. Upvoted and following!

Grew up working on a lobster boat out of Beverly Harbor, MA. Its just a little steem away from historic Gloucester.

Great post and photos! I'm married to an avid fisherman and love spending time on the boat, even though I don't fish a lot myself. Although maybe if I keep following your posts, I'll be able to surprise him with some newfound fishing expertise. 🙂

Being out on the water is so peaceful in itself.. catching fish is just a bonus!
