HUNTING WILD SCORPIONS AT NIGHT WITH UV FLASHLIGHTS - TREATING OUR GUESTS TO A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE!

in adventure •  7 years ago  (edited)

This weekend with @vcelier and @naru-celier has been pretty amazing!

As we kicked around ideas of things to do in between eating and sleeping, I suggested that we go out hunting scorpions at night with some UV flashlights that I recently ordered. I had hoped to get them in time for our Texas trip... but they were waiting for us when we returned instead.

Both @vcelier and @naru-celier thought that this was a great idea, so tonight I loaded up @mama-pepper and the @little-peppers and drove to a certain spot that we know of, conveniently located inside a padlocked fence on the other side of town.

HUNTING SCORPIONS AT NIGHT - THE FULL LENGTH VIDEO

SUCCESS!

If you take a look at the video, you will see that within five minutes of unlocking the gate @naru-celier had located his first ever scorpion! It was a good sized Striped Bark Scorpion and it was very quick. I grabbed it and put it in the container that the @little-peppers had brought along.

At about the 8 1/2 minute mark, @vcelier found our second scorpion of the night. By my standards, they had succeeded!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE?"

In all of my 36 years of life, I have literally only caught a handful of scorpions in the wild. As far as hunting them at night with UV flashlights, I have only ever tried that in Texas years ago, and I have only ever found one scorpion doing it. That was down in Eagle Pass, Texas a few years back, but it has only happened once in my life.

Yes, now that I have some new UV flashlights and know of local places where I can look for them, it certainly will be a periodical hobby of mine, but I had never searched for scorpions by night like this in Arkansas until tonight, and tonight was not about me.

Tonight I wanted our guests from way up north to try to find some. In all of the 67 years that @vcelier has lived, he has never done this. The much younger @naru-celier never had either. So, tonight on this memory-making grandfather/grandson vacation, the two not only got to try looking for scorpions at night, but they succeeded in it!

Many of us will never have such experiences and certainly not with our grandfathers by our side. For @naru-celier, this is one of those nights that he will most likely remember long into his adult life. Interestingly enough, we only found two scorpions tonight, and they each found one on their own! (I even looked around a little more after they left, but could not find another one.)

If we listed the number of times that each of us has found a scorpion in the wild at night with a UV flashlight, it would look like this:

Yup, that looks like a "once in a lifetime experience" for all of us, at least so far!

CLOSING THOUGHTS

These two little scorpions were running around as usual just hours ago. Now they are having their photos being shown worldwide on steemit. What an interesting day and age that we live in.

Even more so, what an interesting community that we are a part of on steemit. From large events like STEEMfest to smaller local meetups to steemians meeting online and getting together one on one offline, I think that steemit has changed things when it comes to real relationships sprouting from online interaction. Not only can the average user gain some money from their online activities because of steemit, they can also gain some real friends.

I have been blessed enough to have met several steemians in real life already, and many I would legitimately call my friends. I look forward to continuing living my life and meeting others, and believe that I will end up meeting many more of you one day. If we did meet up, would you like to try going on an adventure like this? Would you prefer just hanging out, enjoying some meals, and talking about things instead? Is there a different idea that you would want to try? Also, if I came to visit you, what would you want to show me or do with the @papa-pepper tribe while we were in your area?

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

I couldn't watch the video in sound so I don't know if you said anything about it, but, aren't these scorpions dangerous?
So cool experience going hunting for scorpions! Something I have to try in my days to come.

Wow, I'm somewhat impressed and somewhat terrified haha! How do you know these scorpions are harmless?

Very interesting now I want to Go and find some and face my fears , things that jump I just kill automatically the see what it is after I wipe my shoes clean, once I went looking for snakes that the time u don't find them they find u

Wow, I'm somewhat impressed and somewhat terrified haha! How do you know these scorpions are harmless?

They are not harmless. ;-)

But you're happy to hold them?

I just read an article about why scorpion venom is so painful - apparently scorpion venom is mildly acidic and the acid facilitates a chemical reaction which causes the pain receptors in the brain to activate more than they would normally for the same dose of the pain causing venoms. The article made me think about your crazy ass @pappa-pepper :) If you are curious to read it here is the link to a summary article - the summary does contain the link to the original scientific research paper as well:

Very cool!

Many years ago I went on a scorpion hunt like that in AZ. My guide was a university entomologist, so I learned a ton. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Awesome post @papa-pepper I didn't know that the scorpions glow like that under black light, Definitely cool. And as for if you were to come to my area man I don't know if there is time for everything in Colorado. I would probably have to take you out digging for different crystals and minerals along with a day trip down a more calm river for the @little-peppers . The little ones in my life love to go digging and it never seems to be off the list as something to do. There is also the options of snowboarding or skiing if that is something that interest you :) You and the @little-peppers are always welcome in my neck of the mountains.

If you were in my country, I would surely bring you along to fish eels at night in the rivers in Mauritius! It's quite scary but unique experience!

Now I want to come even more!

And of top of that, my country is heading up to be the first Ethereum Island in the world! Check my latest for more info mate! Really exciting times ahead!

KEEP IT UP @papa-pepper - SHIIIITTTT - Didn't even realize papa wrotebtgus post til just now - Makes sense why it's so badass!! Feel free to UPVOTE, SEND STEEM, RESTEEM a random minnow - any of us - Because Karma - Ain't no running from it - It'll come right back to you if done without praise -

Who is the genius that thought of the name .@papa-pepper anyways?? :)

@papa-pepper is the genius.

You see, I am not the original @papa-pepper. The original @papa-pepper made quite a name for himself and it worked out so well that he retired early, but not before taking on a new crew and calling me @papa-pepper the whole time. Once the new crew thought that I was the @papa-pepper that they had heard so much about, the original @papa-pepper jumped ship at the next port and left me in charge of the ship, and the name. So you see, it is not actually me, but the name that makes things so awesome.

The @papa-pepper legacy. Nice!

I like your adventures and that UV light is awesome, have you ever been stung by a scorpion? Is that poisonous, you are so brave!

Nice Scorpion! now... Finish him! :D

He was my favorite character for a while... until Reptile!

hahahaha nice (Y)

What fun! Reminds me of college days in the southwest. We'd get our buzz on, get our battery operated blacklights (required for the neon coloring of that time period) and wander in the hills.

Glad ya'll had a blast!

Sounds cool. It'll be a bigger hobby of mine as we move forward. I couldn't find any growing up in Wisconsin as a kid.

nice weekend what a dangours haunting @papa-pepper

Love how the little critters stand out in the photos.

Crazyyyy bro, nice post on some dangerously fascinating creatures. I hear the smaller the scorpion, the more deadly their venom. Handle them with care of course, or handle them not at all!

PS: I had emailed you yesterday whenever you get a chance.

My Goodness, you guys are brave. I have yet to see one here in east Texas myself, and frankly just prefer to see them on your post. Haha!

I'll try to keep them over here then!

very beautiful and natural. upvote

looks like fun

Totally. We had a lot. A little scary, but a lot of fun!

i wouldnt want to touch one but that is just fear of the unknown

We are unlikely to meet, sadly:(
But I'm always interested in talking with friends about different things, than just eat and drink with them to the company=))

Stunning and courageous...You must be having some sort of training handling such creatures...Seems from the way you have professionally handled the scorpion...

I get a lot of "hands on" experience! LOL.

You are very brave hunting scorpions, If I do not dare, if bitten very sick

Very cool.

I did not know there were scorpions in Arkansas. They look amazing in the blacklight. @ironshield

If you wanted to come out to Hollywood, we'd be happy to host you. While food would be high on the list of to-dos, just like when visitors come to you, I think our adventures would be a little more urban. There would certainly be some family-friendly comedy shows, and probably the La Brea Tar Pits and LACMA sculpture garden. A hike into griffith park, where we PROBABLY won't get eaten by a cougar, but we could. And the observatory and museum of natural history. A day on the beach...

Come on out!

I've got to get back to Cali anyway.... I'll put it on my to do list! Thanks @improv!

That'll be great!

Oh! And if you come in May, we can go on an urban food walk. (There's always something growing, but loquats are my favorite, and that's when they're usually ripe)

wow what beautiful photos! keep up the great posts

Another exciting adventure with @vcelier and the @papa-pepper clan! And since I know you guys like adventure, if you were to come for a visit in the Canadian country, we would all go for a swim with my many labrador dogs in our one-acre pond, and then we would head to the scenic caves and many hiking trails surrounding my home :)
