A New Adventure's Waiting: I'm Ready To Surf The Portuguese Coast!steemCreated with Sketch.

We are each the star of our own situation comedy, and - with luck - the screwball friend is somebody else's. - Robert Brault

Today it was on me, Robert!

While trying on a 2.3mm surf suit I almost collapsed. Thanks to some hot winds coming over from Africa again, we're at 98 Fahrenheit these days (in October!). But cool that Donald Trump negates global warming. Maybe he wants to come over to feel it.

Now everybody who has ever worn a wetsuit knows that it's sports to get in there. It's like a birth - only the other way around, haha!

Also nobody - besides me - is so stupid to do some sports when their body is at a point to dehydrate every second. When there is Calima (sandy African winds), smart people stay at home, have some cool drinks and watch TV.

So that's been my sacrifice for the @steemfest surf action!

Staying hydrated - @surfermarly trying her new wintersuit at 98 degrees Fahrenheit (btw the plastic bags at my feet help to get into the suit more smoothly when it's dry)

Getting ready for some surf action in Portugal!

Since I will have a connecting flight on my way to Steemfest, I plan on taking only hand baggage with me.

On days like these I don't want to risk losing a bag. It would needlessly boost my excitement, and I think my adrenaline level will be high enough at that point of time anyways.

Now I really hope that there will be enough space in my little bag for including my newly acquired wetsuit.

@nomadnessie asked me the other day how I could still surf in my shorty being winter time already. So I guess that was a broad hint towards a more appropriate equipment for Portugal, haha!

Today I bought a new 3.2mm suit, that must be enough for the Portuguese swell.

4mm might be even better, but then I wouldn't be able to use the suit at home again. New suits also cover very well, so I should be well equipped then.

And to be honest, I wouldn't have been able to try on any other suit today! First I picked size no. 10 since this is the size I usually wear. My last winter suit was a 12, but I bought it 4 years ago when I had 8kg more (surfing burns the donuts pretty well, haha).

When I stepped out of the changing room after trying on the second suit, the two guys from the surf shop looked at me a bit worried, then suddenly one of them jumped to the cash desk in order to grab a bottle of water. I was sweating like hell, couldn't breath very well and almost collapsed. That water literally saved me!

What a sacrifice just to catch some waves in freezing water...

Surfers are insane, now it's official - haha!

I haven't been surfing at many places so far, but until now the water was always pretty warm.

The climate on Canary Islands is called the 'eternal spring', so we've got surf weather all year long.

One of the things I like most about my local spot is the fact that I can wear short suits almost always. It provides you with a lot of free moving space. On the contrary, the neoprene can constrict you in a pretty uncomfortable way.

However, once you're in the water you quickly forget about all these surrounding circumstances. Your heart starts beating faster and you get lost in the beauty of the moment.

Talking about heart beats...

That reminds me of my favourite promotional surf video. It perfecly mirrors how a surfer feels.

When watching these kind of videos, one might understand the hype about surfing.

There are actually very few things that can successfully distract us from a new swell coming in.

It makes us getting up early on weekends, drive hours towards the next spot, bundle the last energy reserve even if we're tired, forget to call back our moms, forget to attend a date with a handsome guy (yes, that happened to me once, haha!), or even forget that it's too hot to try on a new winter suit.

It's our joker.

We have a valid excuse for everything.

Now the days are count to discover a new spot.

The only thing I will need to rent in Lisbon is a surfboard. As I mentioned I will only travel with hand luggage, and taking my board with me would be definitely too much stress. I hope @heiditravels and @nomadnessie will be able to help me in finding the right shop at their place then :-)

Steemfest, here I come! 🌊🌊🌊

See you there,

Marly -

Here in NL I always kitesurf in a 3/5 mm wetsuit, can you imagine. In January or actually March the sea water is around 7 degrees I think and the outside air temp is sometimes at around 0 - 2 Celsius... At those days you really learn to appreciate the summer :) It can be beautiful though, with a winter sun and crisp air, however the water can be dangerous too then, so i don't go out of the shoreline much during winter.

See you soon!

Haha, OMG. You must have a thick skin though, and I bet your immune system is able to fight whatever attack. I'm not sure if I was able to concentrate on the waves while my nose gets icicled :-D

I hope it'll be a bit warmer in Portugal... See you very soon!!

Oh dear :) Glad you didn´t collapse, but you might wanna bring some booties - i´m too cold in my 3/2 :) We´ll definitely find you a board, and although @heiditravels and i might be getting awards for the best kookshow, we´re looking forward to surfing with you!

Hey @nomadnessie!

you might wanna bring some booties

I will! Hoping that everything fits in that little bag then :-)

although @heiditravels and i might be getting awards for the best kookshow, we´re looking forward to surfing with you!

Haha, no way! I'm still a beginning surfer, so the stage is yours! :-)

Looking forward!!!!!!!!!!!

Surfing in Portugal, that will make for some awesome posts. I'll be interested in how renting a board goes for you.

Maybe someday I'll make it to Canary Islands and you can give me a surfing lesson or 5 - LOL

I'm going to try to pack in a carry on bag, but I think for that many days, I'll have to bring a check in bag as well. I'm really getting excited about Steemfest, it's only 19 days till I leave. I'm spending 2 days in London before heading to Lisbon. I'll see you there!!

Maybe someday I'll make it to Canary Islands and you can give me a surfing lesson or 5 - LOL

Haha, sure!!! The number of lessons you want :-)

19 days... OMG. I just suffered a little heart attack, haha!
London, that's nice. Imagine: I haven't been there yet. You will need to tell me about it then :-)

See you sooooooooooon

Hey I would love to surf with you in Portugal!

Looking forward to meeting you.

SteemOn to SteemFest!

Let's do ittttt! :-)
Looking forward to seeeing you, too.
19 days... tic tac... hehe

hahahaha OK!

Are you arriving early or staying late?

that video literally gave me the goosebumps... seeing that set roll in is such and amazing thing to watch and even washing out and ending up in the dishwasher is worth the split second that you know you have gotten the wave on the right spot and ride it all the way to the end

And speeking from experience... the water in famara is warm compared to that atlantic portuguese temperature. I really hope you get to grab a few sets though because they are different to what you are used to, the have a bit more oomph
enjoy steemfest and i hope you have your speach ready

that video literally gave me the goosebumps...

Ha, yeah! Every time I see it, I know why I'm addicted to that surfing stuff :-)

Oh I definitely expect it to be different! I was in Maldives last summer and the speed of the waves really impressed me. I needed 3 days to lose my fear and finally paddle into one. Canary Islands are ideal for beginners. But when you have a certain level, you want more. I hope it's not too big for me in Portugal then :-)

Speach is ready, yip! Thanks :-)

Thanks for the welcome to the Troll free zone :)

I've never stood on a surfboard in my life, and I'm sorry to disappoint ahead of time, but Portugal in November will not be tempting me! I hope we have the sunshine over there in a few weeks time :)

I'm doing hand luggage only too, and laptop of course - which i reckon I can sneak a couple of pairs of socks in too :p

8KG since last year is a good effort, unless it's all sweat! Creamy and delicious SF2 cakes a special treat only then!

Byee :D

Thanks for the welcome to the Troll free zone :)

Haha, someone recommended me to do that, commenting on my article about trolls. I think it's a pretty cool idea! :-)

8KG since last year is a good effort, unless it's all sweat! Creamy and delicious SF2 cakes a special treat only then!

Since four years! One year would have been tough. It was fat, not sweat - LOL 😆
Maybe I do a "how to burn your donuts in 4 years post" one day, then you will see the "before and after" pictures, haha!

Byyyyye

Surfin' the donuts away! Sounds like a winner to me!

Give me a topic, any topic, I'll write 500 words about it - challenge on? Be nice!

So awesome! Are you going be surfing right in Lisbon, or will you have to travel down the coast a bit?

I have never surfed before but it's definitely on the bucketlist. I'll be in Lisbon with a solid camera if you need any shots from the shore! :)

@heiditravels was planning to organize a trip to some local spots, but I have actually no idea where they're specifically located. It's going to be a surprise :-)

I'll be in Lisbon with a solid camera if you need any shots from the shore! :)

Wohooo, that'd be great!!

Very cool. Keep me posted! Looking forward to all of the adventures to come!

You are such a free and fun-spirited person to embark on such adventurous hobby. =)

Thank you! Yeah, I think that describes me well :-)

You are welcome dear. ♡

Hi @surfermarly, Thanks for sharing another post/update. Reading it was fun.

Also nobody - besides me - is so stupid to do some sports when their body is at a point to dehydrate every second. When there is Calima (sandy African winds), smart people stay at home, have some cool drinks and watch TV.

Each one of us is special and unique. Blessed are the ones who find their uniqueness and then use it to serve the world. In my humble opinion, we're what we do or tend to do over and over again. I think you're made for surfing and this justifies your Steemit name. We never miss the opportunity to do something that we're made for. What I want to say is well explained in this photo:

I'm sure you're not only an excellent surfer but also a very good writer. I enjoy reading your posts.

However, once you're in the water you quickly forget about all these surrounding circumstances. Your heart starts beating faster and you get lost in the beauty of the moment.

You put your feeling in words in a way that we. the readers can envision those moments. Thumbs up!

I hope you enjoy this biggest Steem event. Meeting new people, sharing experiences and having some quality time is all what you're going to do. Please keep posted and updated us through your posts. I wish you have the best time of the year there at the fest.

Great post.

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

That's my philosophy :-)

Thanks for your lovely comment!

Please keep posted and updated us through your posts. I wish you have the best time of the year there at the fest.

Sure! You can also watch the live-stream from the conference :-)

See you around.

You will get used to surfing in the wetsuit and be glad that you have it if the water is cold. You will be able to stay out surfing for a lot longer. I have to surf in a 4/3 wetsuit all year and am now used to it.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that I will be happy to have it then :-)

The beach is very beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I apologize if any of my words are wrong in commenting.

Thank you!

I apologize if any of my words are wrong in commenting.

It's all good. The only thing you're not allowed to do in my blog is spreading negativity :-)

Have a nice weekend!

Thank you for reminding me. I try not to do the damage. Success always for you @surfermarly 😊

I've never actually been surfing but I've always wanted to try it. I'm sure you look better in a wetsuit than I ever possibly could.

Haha, actually noboby looks good in these :-D Bodies get kind of deformed.
But it's the only way to go...
You should definitely try to surf once. Once you stop falling into the water all the time, it's huge fun!

fantastic post, wish you a best of luck to surf in Portuguese waters, it's great you gather all the necessary tools especially your new suit i hope it protects you from cold climates, i also strongly believe that we just have to start our work with whatever tools we have and surely the good will come along the way, and you are making a brave decision to surf in relatively different weather and different climate with the steemfest2 around the corner but i think you love adventures that's why you can't able to miss that opportunity, Stay safe and happy, thanks for sharing

Thanks for your nice comment, @adnanrabbani!

Stay safe and happy

Promised! :-)

You have a good talent

nice photo

"my steemit"? Didn't know it was yours :-)

Ha Ha Ha ... @surfermarly, You might have missed the news because of surfing. ;)

Haha, seems like :-)

98 Fahrenheit these days (in October!)...thats kinda cool......

Well imagine a hair dryer blowing hot air into your face all the time...
It's not THAT cool actually, haha

Probably best to not take the surfboard lol, don,t want the airport Police telling you off for trying to fit it in overhead storage :P Good luck with steemfest also :)

hey @surfermarly,
Amazing. . I like it. . Thankyou for sharing

a very good post.
you are a very great surfer ,,
I really like your hobby as a surfer ,,,

Marly!

Why would you even think about a wetsuit? Average ocean temperature in Lisbon in November is middle 60's (~65) Fahrenheit, over 18 C...

THAT IS SO WARM!!!!

If I were to put on a wetsuit in those temperatures, I would be sweating in minutes... :O

I trunk it here on the coast of California all year round... down to about 13C...

Man up, girl! ;) :D.... LOL!

Just teasing... you do what you must, but I wouldn't even think about carrying a wetsuit on a trip like that...

Anyhow, I am jealous that I won't get to surf with you in Portugal... Catch a wave for me, please? ;)

<3

😄😇😄

@creatr

Hopefully no Hurricanes go that way. Those are big waves.
