Orion Oros Jacket Review

in aerogel •  7 years ago  (edited)

This 2nd generation Oros jacket (bought December 2017) is far superior to the 1st (Lukla)! I was disappointed with the first one because it fell short for Arctic application. This new one, I love it for the following reasons:

  1. This new one is 100% insulated with Aerogel Solarcore, while the first one was NOT resulted to significant cold-spots (no Solarcore in inside arms, upper back, shoulders, hood) in Arctic climate. While the previous one needed extra thick layers due cold-spots in below zero temperatures, this one all you need is thin dry-fast base layer. It is ideal for active sport in very cold activities.
  2. Truly three season jacket! Since Aerogel is poor thermal conductor, the Solarcore insulation remains at constant temperature whether outside blazing hot or liquid Nitrogen cold. I wore yesterday when it was rainy 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the same jacket you bring to rainy mild Seattle and brutal cold North Pole to see Santa!
  3. Really thin profile. It feels and looks like a regular non-insulated shell.
  4. It is lighter due to slimmer cut, smaller hood (climber helmet won’t fit?), and no more powder skirt.
  5. Great underarm zippers for ventilation.
  6. All zippers are self-closing with plastic tabs to prevent water and wind penetration.
  7. It has well integrated palm gloves.
  8. The outer shell feel strong, but it is not as thick as the previous one. For rock climbing or going through thick brushes, I will put an extra cheap nylon jacket to prevent rips. I hope the next generation will have reinforced elbow and lower arm patches.
  9. It is very well constructed, and looks conservatively stylish.
  10. Beware, it is slim fit cut designed for less layering!
  11. Many packets, but I think they should reduce them to further lighten it down.

Update:
We are currently experiencing Polar Vortex, so here are the updates;

  1. There is no longer Cold-Spots with this jacket, given the 100% Solarcore coverage. In blustery cold condition, I can feel some coldness by the Armpit zippers.
  2. Wearing tight baseliners will create air gap that will leak out the warm air. Middle and/or bottom flexible drawstrings are needed.
  3. I wish the collar were two inches higher for better face protection.
