The book of Exodus tells us the vision of God, the theophany, that Moses has when he meets God in the desert. While it is true that the Bible explains to us about God: "But, he said, ´you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.´" Exodus 33:20; and "No one has ever seen God", John 1:18; this means that we cannot see God in the fullness of his glory, but yes, particular manifestations such as the burning bush in front of Moses, as the Bible tells us in the following passage:
"Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, ´I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.´
When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ´Moses! Moses!´
And Moses said, ´Here I am.´
´Do not come any closer,´ God said. ´Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.´ Then he said, ´I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.´ At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God." Exodus 3:1-6.
God decides to assign a task to Moses, free the Israelite nation from the captivity in Egypt, Moses is a legislator and a spiritual leader of his people: "And God said, ´I will be with you.´" Exodus 3:12.
This is how God begins a series of dialogues with Moses: "The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend" Exodus 33:11. But in these dialogues, God demands an attitude of worship, God, as in the case of Moses, only manifests himself to his devotees: "Then the LORD said, ´There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.´" Exodus 33: 21-23.
