Living in a less economically developed country has its downfalls, yes. But to be honest with you, I love my country, South Africa. I love the rich and diverse cultures of the people and one of my favorite things about my land is the nature and abundant wildlife. NO - lions do not roam wild among the streets here (although they do roam wild in securely fenced reserves) - monkeys however, there's no caging them! They do trot along the streets like they are the leaders of the land!
A few days ago I submitted a post about how the monkeys "broke" into my house, threw a "wild" party (helped themselves to my peanuts) and on departure, left a huge monkey poop on my counter - to welcome me home with! If you didn't see it before, here it is for your ahem, viewing.
Today however I caught one of the perpetrators in action, trying to navigate his way into my home to raid my fridge no doubt! They're super clever like that, they know where food is stored and have mastered the art of turning locks on cupboards and opening fridges!
This is just one of the guilty suspects, there was a troop of about 20 monkeys surrounding the house, waiting for their buddy to give them the go ahead. Luckily, they can no longer outwit me and although I do forget on the odd occasion, I have made it a habit to close all the windows when leaving the house - to avoid just such break ins!
While these visitors to have a tendency to drive me mad at times, for the most part I really enjoy it when they pitch up. They are so interesting to watch and act just like humans do! In South Africa we are about to enter spring in just a few weeks and the little baby vervet monkeys are already starting to make an appearance! I hope to get some photos of them soon to share with you!
I remember when I was young and lived in Durban, how they used to sit on the washing line. I must say that as a young girl I found them intimidating.

I used to find them intimidating, but the only dangerous monkeys are the bulls (I stay away from them). They are quite vindictive with pets though and I have heard a few stories where they have fought with dogs, cats and even killed pet birds!

From what I remember you are quite right. The pack leader is scary! And you feel it more when you are a child.

Wow, having monkeys come into my home would be a bit hard for me to take. I can imagine they could be messy creatures.

I agree animals are not to be kidnapped, caged or killed for human consumption outside of the necessitities to sustain life. Watching them in their natural habitat is a past time of mine also in the tropics :)

Those monkeys hahah they are crazy. Here in Costa Rica if you are having lunch or eating a fruit they will become mad and unless you give them what you are eating they won't stop acting like mad, they scream very laud and they become so angry that even show you their teeth.

I had a similar 'attack' and this is in Singapore. They are very clever and recognize the carrier bag 'logo'. They came in a pack and snatched the plastic carriers from us. So to prevent from these attacks we used other carrier brand and not the supermarket plastic carrier. We also kept all keys and items inside our body or clothings, cannot let them see... they are very clever and intelligent...but they can be dangerous if they don't get their way. Take care.

Wow that's just amazing, that they recognize which brands hold the "good stuff"! They really are very intelligent creatures! I can't believe they are cheeky enough to snatch from your hands, little buggers!
