Agapanthus - the "Lily of the Nile" is not really a Lily.

in agapanthus •  7 years ago

The Agapanthus, or "Lily of the Nile" is Native to Southern Africa. It is popular for it's heads of White or Blue flowers which are carried on long stalks. In Sydney, it is always in flower at Christmas time, which adds to the festive season feeling, and brings a cool feeling to the Summer heat. Once established, these plants are hardy, and will tolerate dry soil for periods, but as always, the more TLC you give them, the more they will give you. There are two types of Agapanthus available, the dwarf form, which grows to around 30 to 40 centimetres high ( a bit over a foot), and the tall growing ones, which grow to about a metre tall ( about 3 feet ). In the photos, the blue ones are the tall ones and the white ones are the dwarfs. Here . they are used on the sides of a driveway. Plant Agapanthus in the full sun for best flowering, but they also do OK in semi-shaded spots. They are easy-care , and have few pests or diseases.new 2 052.JPGnew 2 051.JPGnew 2 053.JPGnew 2 054.JPGnew 2 056.JPG

Agapanthus, or Lily of the Nile, is a perennial flower that has gorgeous blue or white florets arranged in large globes that make this a wonderful addition to the garden. It is very popular California flower and in other places where it is fully hardy. Newer types have been bred for additional hardiness. The roots are large and fleshy, and the leaves are straplike, arising directly from the roots. Flower heads appear, one to a stalk, in clumps of two-foot stalks.

Beautiful flowers really and the more beautiful thing is that it is available in two colors.

Have a look at some more comments, there are more than 2 colours !

Agapanthus, often referred to as "Lily of the Nile" is a versatile, easy to grow plant for warm winter areas. Hardy agapanthus grow 8"-11" in sunny or partially sunny areas, are drought tolerant and require low maintenance. The fast growing varieties are Snow storm and Blue storm agapanthus. The storm series of agapanthus are compact and very easy to care.

Blue storm agapanthus grow up to 20 inches wide and 30 inches high and tolerate a range of soils from sandy to clay.

Even when they are not in bloom, the lush tufts of dense strappy leaves adds flair to any landscape.

Thank you so much for encouraging us @ctrl-alt-nwo.
I really appreciate your blog and great work on steemit.

Hey, I joined Steemit today. I have seen the story by chance. I've studied your blog a little bit and you like flowers like me. It's nice to see people like myself here.

I have been to the agapanthus field for agapanthus these days. I have not been able to see the flower for years, but I was doing research on what they were. And finally when I finally saw the flower, I understood it in front of a famous shopping center. Of course, the reason why I am so surprised is that we are in our province. I could not get around because it was crowded. I think I'll go quietly one night.

welcome to Steemit @whitchking

The AgapanthusФото6864.jpg or "Lily of the Nile". This beautiful plant does not grow in the open ground in our conditions of sharply continental climate. That's why I grow them in pots. In the warm season, I take pots with plants in the garden. Hi @ctrl-alt-nwo, Whenever I involve in some discussion, I do my research. I never heard of Agapanthus flower before so I had to do a little research on it too. There were several fun facts about it and here is my pick:

In traditional medicine, agapanthus is believed to be both medicinal and magical, and it is the plant of fertility and pregnancy. It is used in various medicines taken during pregnancy and is worn by women as a charm to bring strong, healthy babies. It is used to treat heart disease, paralysis, coughs, chest pains and chest tightness. It is also worn by people who fear thunderstorms, as it is believed to ward off thunder.

Lily of the Nile, also known as Agapanthus or the African Blue Lily, is a genus of perennial flowering plants originating from South Africa. The name comes from the Greek words "agape," meaning love, and "anthus," meaning flower. Very nice post
Thanks for sharing

An amazing plant, and how nice that it is at Christmas that it dissolves, gives the holiday a good mood. I read that Agapanthus is a very unpretentious plant. This plant can please its blooming for a very long time. Bright flower balls beautifully decorate the flower beds. Thanks for the exchange.

Lily is very beautiful and genus flower and have very good fragrance. Its name orginated from the Greek words "agape," meaning love, and "anthus,". There are many species of lilies, like trumpet lilies and tiger lilies. Lily flowers are precious for their large, showy, and good fragrance flowers. The strikingly marked petals are trumpet shaped and stumps looks very beautiful when they opened. Aagapanthus african is known as African zambia and Nile zambia.

@ctrl-alt-nwo

if i got one choice to choose a flower in my life this would be Lily of the Nile cool it sound and looks really amazing

I like all the lily family plants with their little mostly white flowers.
First was captivated when I saw them growing in mass on my grandmother's burial plot in Pennsylvania. They were the hardy little lily of the valley ones.

Agapanthus have fleshy roots and leaves and this can make them prone to frost damage. The deciduous varieties are hardiest, dying down in winter. Once they are established, they should all withstand most conditions.

Evergreen types are more tender and their leaves can be damaged by frosts. Therefore, a mulch of straw or fleece is advisable when young plants are establishing or extreme cold (below -5ºC) is forecast. Established clumps of evergreen Agapanthus can withstand -10ºC to -15ºC if the ground is well drained, but the number of flowers maybe reduced the following summer. Planting in beds against house walls can reduce the likeliness of frost damage.

250x230.fit.how-to-grow-agapanthus.jpg

Agapanthus doesn't like to be potted into pots that are too spacious as this will encourage leaf growth rather than flower production. Ideally, they perform best where root development is restricted but the plants are well watered and fed.

Feed weekly or fortnightly with a balanced liquid feed during the growing season until flowers begin to show colour.

Although plants flower well in pots if the roots are constricted, they should not be allowed to become completely root bound and should be split and replanted in fresh compost if the roots become too congested, otherwise flowering will suffer.

Good information !

Great vibes it has got to it feels so positive after seeing the post of yours you just made my day more brighter and smiling :)

Thank you very much for all your excellent work !

Lily of the Nile a flower for your Valentine. And for a card of greeting William Blake would make your meeting:

The modest Rose puts forth a thorn,
The humble sheep a threat'ning horn:
While the Lily white shall in love delight,
Nor a thorn nor a threat stain her beauty bright.

The best thing of Agapanthus is:

choose evergreen forms for entire year to get amazing actions.

Clivia growing in South Africa as well in Swaziland. In ideal conditions it grows into large clumps and also water wise which is surprise thing for everyone. Somewhere it is naturalized too.

Agapanthus. Latin counterpart means love flower ... I saw a plant in this plant that I went to 2 years ago. I did some research later. When I saw your share today, I took a look at my old recordings.

Agapanthus is a very impressive plant with a group of crowded leaves like complementary dark green sword in a bouquet on the tip of a long stem of blossom small flowers. In all kinds of watery permeable soils, they can live happily even in the sun with half-shade, even with complex roots on the tree. It can develop in mild warm climates from Istanbul to Mersin.

Agapanthus has a characteristic. In summer, the plant roots must be damp, dry in the winter. To be able to bloom, it must be planted very tightly in abundant quantities. The released roots do not bloom. If you have plants like that in your garden, gather them together. Agapanthus can also grow in the pot. But keep the pots small. Do not grow it, or you will not see those dear flowers. These plants that you will grow will live very long. It can withstand short snow in winter. Duplication is also easy. Make breaks in the winter or spring. But do not expect flowers for the first summer of these new fidelites. After the blue - purple flowers have passed, the seeds begin to develop. At the end of the summer, you can pick the seeds. Development is also slow. It can grow in 3 to 4 years. I said production is fundamental, but there is something important. Continue the irrigation to improve the fidelity of the separated fidelites until halfway (not the plant).

White flowers, leaves and flowers such as miniature, variegated leafy and winter hill disappearing in the spring again were produced species. The natural winter of Agapanthus remains green with leaves.

Really wonderful photographyDQmZyQND8WonafQYJKKHobKn8fyKKq8934sc8Net3uQ5NDR_1680x8400.jpg Agapanthus planting is best done during the fall or winter in warm climates. Agapanthus makes a lovely back border or focal plant due to its height, beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers and leaf texture. For a dramatic effect, plant a large grouping throughout a sunny garden spot. Agapanthus flowers can also be used in container plantings in cooler regions.
