The incredibly rapid rate at which urbanization is happening presently goes hand in hand with increased urban poverty and food insecurity. Food insecurity means the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of lack of money and other reasources. It does not necessarily mean there is hunger but it’s a possible outcome of food insecurity.
There are cases of low food security and extremely low food security depending on income, employment, race/ethnicity or disability. This risk increases especially when money to buy food in a household is not available or is available but in limited amounts. By the time it's 2020, the developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America will be inhabited by some 75 percent of urban dwellers and to eight out of nine expected mega cities with populations in excess of twenty million.
Approximately 85 percent of the poor people in Latin America and around 40 percent to 45percent of the poor in Africa will be found in large numbers in towns and cities. Most of the cities in such developing countries usually find it hard to deal with this approaching trend and are not able to create enough formal employment opportunities for the poor. Poor disposal of urban waste and wastewater as well as maintaining air and river water quality are all growing concerns. City authorities require innovative strategies to enhance urban food security and improve the livelihoods of the urban poor and in the process strengthen the resilience of the urban food system.
Urban agriculture offers such a strategy by enhancing access of the urban poor and less fortunate to a fresh supply of nutritious food, reducing food expenditures and generating more cash income while also contributing to the cities being green, the productive reuse of urban wastes and adaptation to changes in the climate. Urban agriculture does play a very huge and major role in enhancing urban food security especially to the disadvantaged segment of the population. It undeniably contributes greatly to local economic development and helps win the fight against poverty. Organizations such as UN-Habitat and the World Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) have recognized the growing importance of urban agriculture.
An FAO projects study found out that natural resources per head of the growing population will continue to reduce in the near future and the yield growth potential of crops will be increasingly restricted unless human invention and technology intervenes. In order to manage the agricultural supply chain products as they move, value chain participants require a secure, trustworthy and transparent platform and market place. Agro chain management creates networks amongst fundamental stakeholders thus improving delivery while reducing costs and inefficiencies.
V-farm operates on the belief that vertical farming is the ultimate solution to the major concerns that I have addressed above. The whole idea of building vertically stacked farms on skyscrapers that produce crops at a doubled rate than the normal rate while using less power, having a greatly reduced rate of food waste (80 percent) and using 99 percent less water than outdoor fields is absolutely fascinating and the way forward.
CONCLUSION.
The most fascinating thing about urban agriculture is not its location but the fact that urban agriculture is an integral part of the urban socio-economic and ecological system. I mean who would not be on board with the idea greener earth?.
Food is a basic need and by being open and embracing the concept of urban agriculture will be of great importance to people globally.V farm believes the answer lies upwards. By farming vertically, indoors, the need for agricultural land is reduced and we can focus on disused inner-city buildings and growing within retail/living/working spaces. Food miles will lessen and social enterprise and interaction will be fostered.
