A German study has looked at how 100% organic farming can feed future generations without destroying our globe. The study shows that this is fully possible, assumed that we cut both meat consumption and food waste.
One of the researchers behind the study:
If we continue with "business as usual", we will have trouble producing enough food because climate change will have major consequences for production.
Climate
Agriculture accounts for a large part of the world's environmental impact, but organic farming in many regards has less impact than conventional farming.
Supply of nitrogen
Plants need nitrogen supply to grow. Today, nitrogen comes through fertilizers, but in organic farming, artificial fertilizers are not allowed. Therefore, one has to find other ways to provide the plants with enough nitrogen:
Organic farming instead uses legumes that have roots that are home to "nitrogen-fitting" bacteria. They can take nitrogen from gas form (N2) and convert it to ammonia (NH3), which is necessary for the plants to grow.
