History

In the middle of the eighteenth century, the landlord of Jalalpur Pargana Sheikh Inayetullah Ahsan Manzil, a place known as Rangmahal, created the present place. Later, his son, Sheikh Motiullah, sold Rang Mahal for French merchants. It was long known as a trading chamber. After this, Khwaja Alimullah, father of nawab abdul gani who lived in Begum Bazar in 1830, started living here after purchasing it. On this residence, a masterpiece was created by Khwaja Abdul Ghani Martin and Company, a European construction and engineering company, whose main building was Ahsan Manzil. In 1859 Nawab Abdul Ghani started building the palace which was completed in 1872. He named it 'Ahsan Manzil' after his beloved son Khwaja Ahsanullah. In that era, the newly built palace building was named Rangmahal and the old building was called 'Andarmhal'.

On 7 April 1888, a severe earthquake caused huge damage to the entire Ahsan Manzil. During the reconstruction of the damaged Ahsan Manzil, the existing high dome was added. For the reconstruction and repair, a high quality brick was brought from Raniganj. Engineer Govinda Chandra Roy conducted the repair work. There was no such magnificent building as Ahsan Manzil in Dhaka city during this period. Since its palatial dome is one of the tallest peaks in the city, it has attracted attention from all over the world.

In 1897, on 12th June the earthquake hit Dhaka due to heavy losses of Ahsan Manzil. Nahabat Khan adjacent to Islampur Road along Barandas south of Ahsan Manzil is completely broken. Subsequently, Nawab Ahsanullah rebuilt it. In 1995, the government of Nawab Estate acquired the government under the zonal eviction law. But the residential buildings of the Nawabs are outside the acquisition of Ahsan Manzil and the gardens. With the incessant amount of money and the impact of the nawab family on deprivation, the maintenance of Ahsan Manzil remained inadequate. In the 1960s, Nawab's family members bought valuable items here at the auction.
