AI Big-Data Meet White Collar

in ai •  7 years ago

According to a 2013 study by two Oxford University professors, almost half of all jobs in the United States are susceptible to "computerization" over the coming decade or two. (Siegel, 2017 Jan 26)

This statement is something I brought up earlier in one of my classes. The mechanization revolution replaced factory workers, and the AI/Big Data will push out white collar workers.

While we see the writing on the wall, I am more concerned how many

a) do not see this trend and will be shocked when it occurs and
b) see very little being done in preparation for those workers.

Consider this, sixty-five percent of Americans today work at information jobs that didn't exist 25 years ago, two-thirds of the population in 1900 worked either on farms or on factories.

Three examples of white-collar job replacement when inquired:

   Pharmacists
   Attorneys
  Journalists (Jennings, 2015 May 22)

I keep seeing the replacing of white collar workers in next 10 years. However, this scenario is already playing out today.

One Japanese insurance company, Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance, is reportedly replacing 34 human insurance claim workers with "IBM Watson Explorer," starting by January 2017. (Gershgorn, 2017 Jan 2)

The AI will be used to scan hospital records and other documents in order to parse the data and determine the correct insurance payouts. This will all be automated before presenting the information to the human workers. The new process is believed to be more efficient and faster payout. The productivity is believed to increase 30% with the AI in place.
