Personally, I am pessimistic about the future of AI. But this article has an optimist point of view. It says, "People expect that self-awareness is going to be this end game of AI when really there are no scientific pursuits where you start at the end."

We should worry about the current machines built using artificial intelligence especially since we'll have more and more individuals who do not understand the technology using which leaves room for error. We'll need to focus on failsafe mechanisms to prevent AI from doing something we don't want it to do.

In regards to self-awareness, as someone who has studied in this field. We are nowhere near this. Hell, it took us 50 years to figure out computer vision and the idea of computer vision was initially conceived as a summer project back in the sixties. Therefore, I don't think we have to worry about self-awareness for awhile since we don't even understand awareness in a biological sense now.
