The Science of the Computers of the Future! (And Will Put AI In The Palms of Our Hands)

An example of what one the prototype in-memory chips looks like

There are some exciting changes coming to computer architecture in the near future. I won't waste time, let's jump straight in.

The future is AI. AI on your phone, in your laptop, on your desktop, in the IoT devices around your home, in your car, and on your person. But this AI is going to need to be lightning fast to respond to our needs. It's going to need to have much better and faster processing capabilities.

So what people haven't fully considered is that AI is causing computer scientists to rethink computer hardware. IBM researchers have announced some awesome changes to computer architecture that will supposedly speed up computers by about 200 times.

They achieved this by developing an 'in memory' CPU. Normally the CPU and the memory (RAM) are separate components on a machine that talk to each other via the motherboard (in a traditional PC - but other types of hardware like phones use an analogous method). In this new method, the memory is built into the same chip as the CPU, allowing for "ultra-dense, low-power, massively-parallel computing systems".

These new chips will not only be faster, but they're expected to save tons of energy, as the information will now no longer have to be transmitted between two separate components.

This is awesome. I imagine this would make a world of difference for VR.

I can't wait for the day, when instead of living a normal life, I'll be able to be fed Through IV, laying in a pod... immersed in an MMO for so long, it becomes my reality.

Or maybe I read too much lit-RPG :)
