This is about OpenAI's new SORA demo: https://openai.com/sora.
But first, I'll mention that there were six transformative moments in my life when my perspective of the universe shifted dramatically: in 1993 when I became an atheist; in 2000 when I became a radical for capitalism (aka libertarian); in 2001 when I became an Objectivist; in 2003 when I became a singularity advocate (now known as e/acc); in 2004 when I became an anarcho-capitalist; and in 2013 when I became a Bitcoiner. I remember the exact moment when I adopted these views.
Of these, Objectivism was the most internally transformative, but the Singularity is by far the most externally transformative perspective. For those not familiar, it is the idea that the universe inherently builds from lower to higher complexity, and does so in ever-shorter epochs, leading to a singularity, where from a baseline human perspective, change becomes too rapid to understand. In the final epoch, the universe itself is converted to intelligent matter.
Now, onto SORA, and why it's a game-changer. Imagine creating miniature universes. That's what SORA's doing. By generating these mesmerizing videos, the LLM isn't just making pretty pictures; it's constructing three-dimensional models of the world, complete with the essential characteristics of everything within. It's about creating entities with just enough "essence" to be convincingly real in these simulations. Those puppies you see? They're not just images; they embody "puppy-ness" in a way that makes the virtual scene come alive. And it doesn't stop there. Imagine two people chatting in one of these videos. They're not just random animations; they possess enough human-like qualities to make their conversation seem real. The potential is limitless. Think about zooming into a painting in a virtual art gallery, watching its characters spring to life, and engaging in dialogue. We're talking about whole universes crafted on demand!
I've been anticipating this future for over two decades, and seeing it start to unfold is exhilarating.
If you're struggling to wrap your head around the sheer magnitude of this innovation, don't worry. Give it a few years. I've largely turned away from current media because I've seen a glimpse of what's on the horizon, and let me tell you, it's far more captivating than anything we have today. Sure, there are exceptions, but nothing compares to the endless possibilities that SORA and the future of AI promise.
